Hi Is it possible to upgrade an 8600 (memory, processor, hard drive) in order to use it for decent video capture under OS 9? Mine already has maximum ram. What upgrades would be necessary? Thanks Laurier |

Good point! the hollywood DV bridge does the analog to DV conversion for you, thus allowing for a less expensive way to capture full frame full rate video via FW on our older macs... Marty I exported to VHS through my DV camcorder... |

I have an old 8600 that I upgraded with g4 450, firewire and xpostfacto to use osx and use a cheeta hard drive and hollywood dv bridge to capture movies. I use i movie of premeire to capture full frame 29.97 f/s and get fine results. This worked fine for me with os 9 and premeire 6 also. These upgrades are not real expensive if you want to get good quality movies. I cannot expost through firewire to vhs for somereason though. |

This forum is about running Xpostfacto on old world macs. That said. I used my old Powermac 7500 with a G4/400 and an add in Firewire card for DV capture and it worked flawlessly under OS9(FCP1.1). The same machine with a G3/350 was too choppy to work with. Also if you intend to do capture from an RCA or Svideo source (ie analog) then you will NEVER be able to get full frame full rate quality unless you spend big $ on an Aurora fuse type card. Also be prepared to build Ultra SCSI Raid arrays in order to get enough throughput for high quality analog capture on old world macs. If you don't need full frame (ie 320*200 is ok) then you can get by with any card which supports video in and the existing I/O hardware. Good Luck Marty |

A tiny bit off topic. Memory is dependent more on the OS you run and the program you use for video capture. So get what the program and OS needs or 8-128MB DIMMs in case you decide to move up to OS X. Processor makes editing faster, but won't really speed up capture. A G4 is really a good idea if you plan on using a video editing program that can take advantage of it or you plan on moving up to OS X. Now hard drives is an area where you should probably upgrade. I got an Ultra SCSI card and an Ultra SCSI drive to go with it. You want to minimize dropped frames due to a drive that can't keep up. Their is also the issue that analog video takes up a lot of disk space. An finally no worries on the video card, though a Radeon will make "X" so much more fun. |

Your 8600 under OS 9 should have the minimal requirements to do video capture. Look at www.bigfat.com/mac8500-l/optimizing_video.html |
