Dear Forum: I have a friend who has a PowerMac 8500 with a Sonnet G3 350 upgrade card installed and is interested in running OS X on this computer. If I install OS X on this 8500, will the L2 Config Cache software recognise the Sonnet card? Also, which version of OS X is recommended to run on such a computer? Have there been issues with installing Jaguar on older PowerMacs such as the 8500? Roland :) |

I tried using Sonnet's G4/800 with an ixmicro ultimateRez Pro video card ... and things didn't go well. Installation of X went ok, but I got video problems. Sonnet recommends a Radeon 7000 Mac Edition replacement ... newer card/ newer drivers idea ... or, more recently, since I am trying to upgrade from a G3 to a G4 and save the video card expense, I am going to try their slower/older technology G4/400 (limited supply Special Offer from Sonnet). Also had problems with Sonnet's G4/800 and an Audiophile 2496 ... PowerLogix's G3/400 had no problems with it as far as I can tell - neither the video or audio cards or OS X 10.2.4 have problems with the PowerLogix. Just received M-Audio's response" We do not support third-party processor upgrades ... only Apple native G3/G4's" ... Oh Poo: How politically correct ... |

I have installed X onto an 8500 with a Powerlogix g3 300 and it went without a hitch EXCEPT that I had to pull the video card and install using the built in video of the 8500. The cards tried were a Rage 128 and an IXmicro. The cards worked fine once the installation was finished (which took forever with the 10.0 to 10.1.5 updates). I never tried to install Jag on the 8500 since I switched to a 9600 with a g4 450. |

Hi ... I've been running OS X (10.2.4) on two PowerPC 8500s for a few weeks now. Used the Sonnet PCI X Installer on both. One has a Sonnet G4/800 and the other a PowerLogix G3/400. The Tune Up works for both machines, as well as the Installer ... I really don't know all the details of what is involved, but since I had several Sonnet PCI cards in both machines, I figured I'd stick with them for their installer. Sorry, Xpostfacto people ... seems like you're on a plateau as far as development is concerned ... I needed the L3 cache enabling ... Really like the fluidity of X ... Good luck with your machine configurations ... Bill |

The sonnet software won't help you any with a G3/350, as it has no L3 cache. Although you will still get the earlier cache speed. I recommend Ryan's L2cacheconfig utility for your setup. True, booting will take a bit longer, but it is very reliable and free. Marty |

Yes, the free Sonnet Tune Up is tons (technical term) faster than the L2 Config software because it also enables the L3. I ran L2 for a week before I discovered that you can download the Sonnet Tune Up even if you haven't paid for the Sonnet OS X software. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! Tom |

I have Jag on a Umax J700 (8500 or 8600 i can't remember) and it runs great, but mine is upgraded alot: G4 400 664MB ram ATI Radeon orig 32DDR Firewire Hard drive and CD burner (fireiwre doesn't boot, Yet) yes L2cacheconfig will enable it but i would suggest running sonnets Tunes up then reinstalling the XPostfacto extentions, this will leave behind all of the sonnet extentions that will help his card and they enable the cache early in the boot process so the boot is faster. If you can get Jag get it, it is what everything is being made to right now, but panther is comming out in a few months, just something to consider... Good luck, Jim |
