Radeon 7000, OS X.2.4 and PCI Extreme! |

Anyone successful using PCI Extreme on a PowerPC 8500 with the Radeon 7000 Mac Edition? I thought I had it working on one of my 8500s (I have 2) when I was trying to also get the machine to work with an Audiophile 2496 in tandem with Sonnet's G4/800 ... but then I moved my G4 and Radeon back to my base 8500 machine, and I cannot get it to accelerate. Same OS X 10.2.4 ... as far as I can remember my installation. Any ideas? |

Mc68k- Yes, I can confirm with Quartz Extreme Checker. I do have a routine I follow after every system upgrade which may be why it works for me: 1. Upgrade system software - restart as required. 2. Reboot into OS 9 from System Preferences/Startup Disk 3. Run XPostFacto 2.2.5 from OS 9 - set Advanced Menu to reinstall Boot X and Extensions 4. Reboot into OS X from XPostFacto 5. Run all cron and cache tasks with MacJanitor, Cocktail, or other utility 6. Repair permissions with Disk Utility 7. Run PCI Extreme (AGP and PCI Install.pkg) - then required final restart into OS X rpjallan- I am thrilled with the Sonnet G4 800/Sonnet Trio/Radeon 7000 in my PowerTower Pro. I've had no problems of any kind except for the lack of sound input. At first I did not expect to switch over to OS X completely, but I now find that I never boot OS 9 except for above housekeeping and DiskWarrior once a month. I do not play any games so there is nothing I miss about OS 9 except perhaps scrolling speed. The Sonnet Trio drives my WD 1200JB SE 120GB hard drive and Pioneer DVR-105 (DVD sound skips sometimes-not always). The transfer speed far surpasses my old SCSI drives and SCSI CD burner. I found it important to use the most up-to-date drivers, ROM flashes, and OS X/L2/L3 cache enablers from Sonnet, then reinstall XPostFacto on top of the Sonnet kext extensions for OS X. My USB devices (mouse and printer) work fine, and my external Firewire drive also works fine from the Sonnet Trio. I have removed all PCI cards except the Radeon 7000 and Sonnet Trio. I have never had a kernel panic or system failure since hardware installation in September, 2002. Now if I could just get that pesky sound input to work, I would sing the praises of Apple OS X and XPostFacto. Tom PowerTower Pro 250Sonnet G4 800Radeon 7000Sonnet Trio |

>>can you guys confirm QE over PCI with Quartz Extreme Checker? No (I haven't tried), but I went to the Desktop control panel and set it to change the picture every five seconds. Before I installed PCI Extreme it would be an instant change. After installing, it gradually fades in and out, which is a feature of Quartz Extreme. >>Tom, why do you have two Radeon 7000's? To run 3 monitors. A 19" on a 64mb PC convert, and 2 15" monitors flanking it running on the 32mb Mac Radeon with the two connectors. Photoshop is great with multiple monitors. All palettes can be separated and seen at all times without using the space of the main monitor. At other times, I run iCal on the left and Mail on the right, and use the middle for Safari or whatever. |

Hi Tom & Tom Tom, why do you have two Radeon 7000's? And, Tom, what do you think of the Sonnet G4 800 and the Trio? Looking forward to your replies. I'm off to install 10.2.5. Richard |

No trouble here with PCI Extreme and OS X 10.2.5. But no notable difference in speed from 10.2.4. Tom PowerTower Pro 250Sonnet G4 800Radeon 7000Sonnet Trio |

Fun when things work, isn't it? For those that like numbers, and XBench, see the following site, and Search for "Bill Connelly" (without the quotes) - my Before and After Xbench results should pop up for you to look at: http://ladd.dyndns.org/xbench/ For what I use these 8500s for, I'm sitting pretty for awhile ... i am wondering, though, if I clobbered anything I had already setup by re-installing 10.2.4 ... oh well, time will tell ... Does anybody else thinks its funny to say they switched to OS X because the current version number reminded them of Dr. Pepper? I should get back to my music and painting studio work ... and maybe get out more often ... |

If I use the 10.2.4 Installer, will it just overwrite my previous updates? My October 2002 ATI updates may be affected as well? The .plist file opens with TextEdit - perhaps I should look into using "The Terminal" (I'm in the early learning phase of OS X) so as not to cause any damage to the file or path?. Configuration.plist was not missing on my other machine, and showed that PCI Extreme! had updated the command lines to include the one about PCIs. That is why Quart Extreme worked there, I assume. Thanks, I will try re- installling the 10.2.4 update, then PCI Extreme. |

I would reinstall the 10.2.4 combo update since it seems the Configuration.plist file is missing. If you don't want to use the terminal to launch pico or vi then the only option you have is to use pci extreme again. You could also try opening the file from OS9 but I don't know if simple text will damage the file. BBEdit would probably work ok though. |

It is possible that I had not done the Security update on my second machine, and that would leave it open to have experienced the acceleration. I have installed that update on my base machine - which is where I am having non-acceleration "problems". I believe I read somewhere that with 10.2(.4?) Apple did something that killed the PCI Extreme effect. Can anyone confirm this? What about my "missing' Configuration.plist? Is Apple really profiting from nonsupport of its older machines? Hey, Thanks for all the feedback ! |

I have a 7300 with Sonnet G3 300 and original Radeon Mac Edition. I was using PCI Extreme ok until I installed the Security Update 2003-03-03 (10.2.4) which seems to have killed it! I can definitely notice it is no longer working! |

I'm still looking for "Configuration.plist" in the path given below ... did it get moved or deleted when I did a Restore? I have tried to restore the original configuration by running that app included with the PCI Extreme! package ... Quartz Extreme Check is the app used to check for acceleration (forgot where it can be retrieved - from PCI Extreme site?). What do I open a Configuration.plist with? There are several same-named files around, but in different paths ... not the one I'm looking for? This is getting so close to DOSey thingys ... I have also tried the Custom Install app included with the hack. Oh, I am using the OS X 10.2.4 from what I believe is the combo installer package. PCI Extreme just doesn't seem to be working - probably because the Configuration.plist in the Coregraphics.framework has been somehow deleted. Any suggestions? |

That did not format correctly unfortunately. If you open the file up in vi or pico you will see what I mean. |

Check to see if the Configuration.plist file in the path below has the change noted at the bottom. If not then you can change it yourself /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Fr ameworks/ CoreGraphics.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Configuration.plist Here is the section that needs changing for PCI card users (again still requires a Radeon card) GLCompositorRequiredClasses IOAGPDevice Change IOAGPDevice to IOPCIDevice |

I got PCI extreme to accelerate on my G$/800, PowerPC 8500 and ATI 7000. I think the update may have disabled the setting when I installed 10.2.4. I downloaded PCI extreme and ran it again (then rebooted). It runs without a hitch. (you can also get the pci check program...i forgot what the name was...to see if it is actually enabled.) The windows run smoother, but it will flood the PCI bus when running a movie and doing another activity at the same time. I may diable it later. You just have to see if it works for you. I just think apple needs to tweak the OS so everything runs faster; unfortunately the graphics card is going to be a serious bottleneck in a graphic- intensive operating system. You can definitely see the difference compared to the onboard video and it's a good investment, especially if you can flash one of the cheaper PC version of the 7000. |
