I am wondering which old world machines still seem to have sound input with OS X.x and XPostFacto without the use of a sound card like Audiophile, etc. I recall that someone mentioned they had sound input on 8500/8600 av machines - really? If so, what hardware configurations(CPU, etc.) are successful with sound input? This is a different issue from the complaints about sound output, of which I have none, but which are mentioned in many threads here. I suspect that until/unless Ryan addresses the sound input hardware kext issues with OS X.x we who have no sound input will have to find other solutions. Since we have not heard from the leader of this forum since Feb.19th, it may be many more months waiting for a solution. My experience is identical to joevt's. Only the mic input works and it overloads very easily - so keep your input level very, very low. I knew from the beginning that the AV card on my 8600 won't work under X - Ryan had posted a message saying that. I was delighted when the sound out worked through the RCA - but I guess that those jacks are just connected in parallel to the sound out mini jack. |

A couple other sound output notes: Mute and balance do not work for either headphone or RCA jacks. I am using 10.2.5. I beleive nothing hass changed from previous versions of OS X. |

Sound input works on my 8600/200 with XLR8 G3 500 MHz. Only the microphone jack works. There is no way to select the RCA input jacks (or External Mic or CD or DAV input, whatever that is and what is the difference between Sound In and External Mic?). For the microphone jack, I have to set the Input Volume really low but that's the same for OS 9.1 and 9.2.2. Sound output works. Output goes to both the headphone jack and the RCA jacks. Output Volume does not work for either output. Alert Volume works because it is done in software. |

My 8500 has no problems with sound input--at least when I use the Sound Control Panel and some applications. They all record sound fine. Input gain works, too. My config works w/ a PowerLogix G3 and Sonnet G4; w/ Radeon 7K, Zynx ethernet, and USB/FW card. I only use SCSI but have a mixture of wide LVD/non-LVD, and ATAPI. |
