After upgrading my PowerMac 8600/XLR8 G4 450 to 10.2-10.2.5 (XPostFacto 2.2.5) I lost my external Yamaha 4416S SCSI CDRW which Toast 5.2 recognized in 10.1.5 with some tweaks*. The fix? After I installed Sonnet X Tune-Up 1.2.6 the CDRW is again recognized by Toast. It seems that the Sonnet L2 cache enabler also installs some CDRW-related kernel extensions which apparently made the CDRW re-appear. I tried also L2CacheConfig 3.3 and PowerLogix Cache Control X 1.2 before trying Sonnet X Tune-Up 1.2.6. I prefer Sonnet because it loads very early and thus makes the boot process quicker. As a nice touch it also enables Apple System Profiler to correctly display L2 cache size even with my XLR8 card unlike other L2 enablers. And most importantly, it brought the CDRW back so now I don't have to boot into 9.1 to use it. IMO this is good PR for Sonnet. XLR8 MACh Speed Control 2.6.1 required a serial number and it doesn't work in 10.2 anyway. I have good experiences from Sonnet Tempo ATA100 PCI card, and if I'm ever going to get another CPU upgrade, I'd most certainly check Sonnet first. (*Of all things, installing Networking Update 1.0 and booting in verbose mode made the CDRW appear in 10.1.5). |
