I am tring to print from 8600 (upgraded to g4 450) to a laserwriter select 360. I can't see how to configure gimpprint to use the serial port and when I use usb I can see unknown in advanced add printer and choose laserwriter select 360. However when I go to print it spools but the printer light does not start to flash and nothing prints. info is not getting through. Can someone enlighten me on this. I asked about this earlier and was told I could use serial to serial ports but need a more detailed explination please or I need some help with the usb to parallel route. Thanks |

Hey Burton, I read your message re getting an Epson Stylus Photo to work via USB/parallel/Gimp- print. I have an Stylus Photo 700, so about the same lineage I imagine. However, I've been unable to get it to work via gimp-print. It does work in Classic and sometimes when you print in Classic first then it'll work in OSX for a bit. Any hints?? Thanks |

You should be able to use either the parallel(36-way) or RS232(25-way) interfaces on the LW Select 360. You will not be able to use the LocalTalk (8-pin mini-DIN) unless you use an Ethernet to LocalTalk bridge device (e.g. AsantePrint) since OSX does not support LocalTalk on built-in serial interfaces. There is a mode select switch on the printer, situated between the interface connectors which must be set to the correct value. On the parallel interface the printer can accept either PostScript or PCL (an HP printer language). If you use GimpPrint and choose the LW 360 option then you must ensure the port is configured to accept PostScript. Here's a link to the spec sheet for the printer which will explain all the available modes. http://developer.apple.com/techpubs/hardware/Developer_Notes/Printers/ LaserWriter_Select_360.pdf Serial (RS232) printing is possible but will be very slow since the fastest speed of the serial interface is 38400 baud so you're better off going the parallel route. |

The specifiic printer needs to be supported in Gimp-Print. Gimp-Print has an extensive web listing of all the printers it supports, and whether full options or partial options are available. Using the Advanced option in Printer Setup, if the printer is supported, its name and model number should be visible. Make that selection. I am using an 8 year old Epson Stylus Photo connected with a USB/Parallel adapter cable from computer to printer. The printer has serial (non-LocalTalk) and Parallel ports. I seem to remember that LocalTalk printers may not work with the USB/Parallel adapters. -Burton |

The select 360? http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=94016 The above link seems to show the select 360 works OK under linux as a generic postscript device. That seems promising. I don't know about the USB to Parallel thing, but if it is hooked up it should show in the ADVANCED printer setup? The advanced drop down is kind of confusing, but if you look at the menu carefully there should be an item that explicitly includes the USB path to your connected printer. Marty |
