i don't understand... OS X.2.5, pm9600/200, 640mb ram xlr8 mach carrier/xlr8 400 oc'ed to 450. 1: radeon 7000 2: protools digi001 card 3: aurora fuse capture card 4: advansys 3940uw scsi card 5: sonnet usb/firewire card 1 drive on the internal channel of the advansys with 3 partitions, "X", "9.1", and "8.6". 1 drive on the external channel, currently has 9.1, some data. 1 usb hdd, 1 firewire hdd. 1 internal stock scsi hdd, with X.2.5. I would like to move this to the advansys u/w bus with cccloner. I tried using xlr8 control panel, but it crashes everytime. cannot use it. I tried the L2 cache enabler, butI can't tell if it is working (system profiler says 512k, but card should be 1mb, right?). and, now i am getting random freezes. are there any pointers in getting L2cache working correctly? |

L2Cache Config is a 3 step process. First you need to be in 9.1(if memory serves, 9.2 has problems running this) and use something like the Powerlogix cache config program to give you the cache info (a series of numbers reported in the control panel). L2 Cache grab then runs in 9.1 and is a little program that you start and it writes that info to a file then puts the file on the desktop. Then use XPF to boot into X. In X, you run the L2cache config program which asks you to get the above file with the info that was written to the app that you ran in 9.1. It loads this info and allows you to throttle that cache. Alternatively, you can manually write down the info in the Powerlogix control panel in 9.1 and then manually enter it into the cache control panel in X. I have never used any other cache control in X but if XLR8 has prolems past 10.1.5 (as naturist says) then it may have extensions that are causing problems for you. Read everything in L2Cache Config's web page to tell you what I have just summarized. It has worked very well for me but until you run XPF cache control panel in X with the cache info given in the Powerlogix control panel in 9, your cache is not working. The difference is dramatic with it working. You may want to throttle down the chip to its rated speed until you know that the other things are not causing problems. Limit your variables. |

This yet another of those topics that has come up time and time again on the XPF forum. Personally I use PowerLogix CacheControl as I've found it works best for me (8600 w/G3 400). To summarise the dozens of posts on this subject it's a question of using whichever cache enabler works best on your system. They all have their pro's and con's so I can only suggest you try each one and stick with the one that appears to work best. Everyone seems to get different mileage with these utilities. If you want to know whether your cache enabler is working then run a benchmark such as Xbench - it will be obvious if the cache is working or not, Some enablers may report correctly in Apple System Profiler but many will not. In fact ASP is pretty useless on old world machines in terms of mis-reporting hardware such as cache, USB and Firewire buses so you might as well ignore it, |

I tried L2CacheConfig 3.3 and PowerLogix Cache Control X 1.2 before trying Sonnet X Tune-Up 1.2.6 on my 8600/XLR8 G4 450 with 10.2.5. I prefer Sonnet because it loads very early and thus makes the boot process quicker. As a nice touch it also enables Apple System Profiler to correctly display L2 cache size even with my XLR8 card unlike other L2 enablers. And most importantly, it brought the external SCSI CDRW back so now I don't have to boot into 9.1 to use it. It seems that the Sonnet L2 cache enabler also installs some CDRW-related kernel extensions which apparently made the CDRW re-appear. |

the XLR8 software has not worked since 10.1.5, and is useless for 10.2.5. I agree that the best choice is the L2 CacheConfig program you can find on this site. Do make sure that you use only a single L2 cache enabler. If you have any two of them on there, you will have random crashes and other bad juju. And I also agree that System Profiler will report malarky about your processor/cache. Don't worry about it. |

Use L2 cache config. Pay no attention to Apple system profiler, it provides all sorts of screwy info. You will feel the speed boost when your cache is enabled. I don't know about the bootability of the advansys 3940uw card, although it might be the same as Apple's/ATTO's Express PCI PSC, in which case it will boot with the proper firmware. Marty |
