Upgrading 7600 to OS X |

Over a year ago, I attempted to use xpostfacto software to upgrade my 7600 to OS X and failed every attempt over a period of several months. (I also used Sonnet's package to no avail.) When I used the verbose mode the indication was that my CD ROM reader was obsolete. I couldn't figure out what to do about that as there did not seem to be a solution. Now I see in Apple Discussions that it may be possible to get an ATA-PCI card that will allow for the installation of newer IDE drives that are compatible with OS X. In fact the article points to two devices sold by OtherWorld. One is an Acard ATA 133 and the other is a SIIG ATA 133. The question is whether there is a bootable OS X compatible CD ROM reader that plugs into one of these cards that will allow me to get past this block in upgrading to OS X? |

You should be able to pick up a faster CD drive off ebay for very little I would aim for an 8X or better for instance here is a 12X: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2729411040&category=11150 I just picked up a 12 and an 8X for about the same. With the Apple ROM they are the most trouble free approach. Also I have found that a faulty CD Drive can cause some strange problems including aborted / frozen startups, even drives that seem to work perfectly. Hope that helps Jim |

I used XPostfacto 2.2.5 to upgrade my 7600 to 10.1. I partioned my hard drive putting a clean version of OS 9.1 on one partion along with the XPostfacto 2.2.5 and then re-installing the original CD-ROM back into my computer (I originally had a internal Yamaha CD-ROM burner in it prior to installing OS X). The install went fine. Just let XPostfacto 2.2.5 do its job and let it run (even when you think its not working, let it go, have patience). After a sucessful install of OS X.1 I soon discovered it would not reconize my Yahama CD burner (after I had put it back in my computer). When I later upgraded to OS 10.1.5, the upgrade took care of the burner issue and now that works fine. - Russell (rsgleason2000 |

The original CD-ROM in a 7500 on which I used XPostFacto to install OS X did not work either. I used an external SCSI (an oldish NEC) and it worked fine. The original internal works under X most of the time. I did use an ACARD 100 card to mount a Yamaha 20-10-40 in an 8600. It worked fine as a reader, but burning under Toast always returned drive sense errors. |
