removing Xpostfacto extensions? |

I just swapped a HD with all my stuff on it from my old S900 to my PowerMac DP which has been out for repair. Since the PowerMac doesn't need all the Xpostfacto stuff and seems to boot more slowly with it, is there any way to remove this other than performing a clean install of OS X? |

Don't screw around with it, I also broke one of my machines this way.... Better to wait a few extra seconds on startup. Besides, how often do you need to restart anyhow ? :~) Marty |

At first I tried removing the files named patched*.ext. Do not try this at home; my machine would not start up in X again, not even by putting the files back again. Removing all extensions dated 21 okt 2002, as well as the invisible bootX.image, the mach and mach.sym files which are created anew anyway at restart, and the extensions.kextcache and extensions.mkext files did the trick. No more holdups at boot, and L2 cache seems fine, the DP being just as snappy as before. Yes it is a supported Dual Processor G4, native, etcetera. I'm not that stupid, just lazy. |

If you could get a listing of all extensions that are installed you could remove them manually. I ended up reinstalling OS X on my B&W G3 when I moved some of my drives over and it seemed like everything was faster. It may be something to do with the L2 software. Mine didn't need any extra extensions to enable it with a G4 upgrade. I'm not sure if removing the L2 software will let the built in software to take over automatically or not. It's was easy to reinstall for me since I had another disk to copy all my files to. You can also try an archive and install although some people say they have had some troubles doing it that way. |

Unless the PowerMac (DP??) is a native G3 or G4 it will need the XPF extentions if it is an Old World Mac it may be running slow due to it's L2 cache not being enabled. |
