I've been running a PM7500 w/a Sonnet CrescendoG4/700 and Radeon7000 just fine, making all 10.2.x updates as they came out. I am currently running 10.2.6 and 9.2.1 (installed via OWC 9.2.1updater). Before updating to this particular OS combo (10.2.6 and 9.2.1), I was able to reboot back and forth between 10 and 9 (necessary in order to print to my old hpLaserJet). Now, when I "restart" for any reason, there is no guarantee that my monitor will fire up. Sometimes it will restart in 9 even though I had selected 10 in System Prefs. Sometimes, I finally get it going by holding down "command" and "option" keys -- not sure why, but by the time I do that, something made it work! I am about to add a Tango 2.0 to my last PCI slot so I can connect a new scanner and new printer. I need a stable, dependable machine -- and some help! |

It would be well worth installing a new PRAM battery--7 or 8 years is about right for it to start failing. And your symptoms could well be caused by that. |

Thanks, Dan. I will definitely try-out your printing solution when get the USB/Firewire PCI card ("Tango") installed. I am truly grateful for your help. Obviously, I am not a geek so I'm in over my head with what I've added onto my PM7500 (see first thread post). My screen does come up black on start-up (unless it decides seemingly on its own to boot into OS9). Although my date and time settings have not waivered, could I need a new PRAM battery? I have never replaced it and so it must be going on 7 or 8 years old by now. |

I have no explanation for the problems you are having booting between 9 and X. However, I also have a 7500 with an older HP LJ 5MP. My solution was to add a USB PCI card (I assume that is what a "Tango" is). All you need then is Belkin's USB-to- Centronics adaptor (less than $20 and available in most computer supply stores). Every LJ I have ever seen has a Centronix parallel port, so I imagine yours would also. OS X comes with a built-in driver for virtually all of the older Laserjets. I was amazed when I got done cabling and Print Center saw my Laserjet immediately. One caveat is that you shouldn't be tempted to download HP's OS X drivers. I had no luck with that and it was a bitch to get back to the Apple drivers. Using the same USB card, I am also attaching to a Lexmark X83 printer/scanner/copier and an Iomega CD/RW. I'm guessing you are like me and don't want to get rid of your Laserjet because of the low cost/page, high resolution, and because the toner lasts almost forever. This has worked extremely well for me. The other option I have seen is an ethernet-to- Localtalk adaptor. Those seem to run in the $80 range and don't make much sense economically for only one Localtalk adaptor. Anyway, try this and you won't care if you can boot into 9 ever again. -Dan |
