Hi, I just installed a new G4 Sonnet Crescendo 800 Mhz PCI card. Initially everything looked great, I installed Sonnet's Tune-up 1.2.6, re-installed XPF extensions etc. but my system freezes and crashes a lot. Under both OS 9.x and 10.2.6. before I had a Newer Tech G4 400Mhz and it was fine and now..... :-( Earlier(two months ago) I had also installed Power Logix G4 enabler since Newer Tech didn't have anything compatible to 10.2.X, could that be the problem? I see a Power Logix preference folder in the System/Library/Powerlogix folder but I cannot delete it, it wouldn't let me, how do I get rid of that? Why is my system unstable even under 9.X? Extensions conflict? Bad card? Everything was fine with Newer Tech card. On the manual it said something about Altivec extension, its not in my current system where can I download that? Sorry lots of questions, But I need help, pls help, someone.... My Config: PTP Pro w/ Sonnet Crescendo 800 Mhz G4 800 Mb ram Ati RADEON Mac edition (original) 32 Mb Adaptec SCSI LVD Card Evergreen Firewire/ USB card Creative Sound Blaster card Gabby |

terran, thanks a lot. i figured out that my FW/USb card was bad, so i brought in a FW card from my work (that was laying around) and the capturing works fine, actually i am pretty impressed even with FTP and i-movie capturing on my old PTP with Sonnet G4 800 I have used a new dual G4 to capture and honestly the difference is not great, but the new machines r more stable though. gabster |

I tried doing video capture using a usb device. Even though i got some video, it was close to webcam quality. Not good; so i can imagine what is like capturing video with firewire. I'm not sure what the bus speed on your PTP is but the bandwidth may be too much for it. It also crossed into watching DVDs and Divx as well. The bus couldn't keep up for video based processes in OS X. I kinda threw in the towel doing video on my Powermac 8500. It was good for basic tasks, but when video became involved it just wasn't up to the task. I ended up building a 1GHZ CoreCrib instead and relegated my 8500 for server tasks. Just my 2 cents... Even though my problem is solved, my system still crashes, when i am using i-movie or final cut pro to capture video. Could it be my Firewire card? Should I get a different FW card? Right now I have a Evergreen Fireline card, how r the Sonnet cards? What about the those Trio cards from Sonnet? Any suggestions? Gabby |

To get rid of the unwanted PowerLogix stuff you could to one of two things - I'd favour the latter as it will prove useful in the future as well. 1) Change the permissions on the folder you want to delete using the sudo command. This gives you temporary root privileges provided you are logged in under an administrator account. Open a terminal window and type in sudo chmod -R 777 /System/Library/PowerLogix That will give you the privileges to delete the folder from the Finder. Note that filenames are case sensitive in the terminal. 2) Enable the root account on your OSX system so that you can occasionally log in as root and sort out problems like this directly without having to mess around with the "sudo" command in terminal. To do this, go to the /Applications/Utilities folder and run the "Netinfo Manager" program. Under the "Security" menu select "Authenticate" and type in your administrator password. Then select "Enable root user" from the same menu, you'll be prompted to enter a new password for the root user. Once done you can log out and then log in as root (click on the "Other" button in the login window - root is never displayed as one of the available login names). Logged in as root you should be able to delete the problem files/folders. |

can't you get info on it then change the premissions from Root to yourself? or is that not allowed? it is odd that it does not show up in OS9 because it should not be a hidden file, if you know the path to the file find it in OS9 by manually navigating to it to see how far you can get. |

You may have to use the visibility option to find the files in OS 9.1 Sherlock. I recall that you may have to hold the option key down to activate it while setting search functions. Tom |

Thanks Tom, I did install the floppy that came with the card. I tried to locate the System/ Library/ Power Logix stuff from 9.X but it doesn't see it, I even did a sherlock from 9.x to locate it in the OS 10.x partition but no luck. When I am in OS 10.x, I see it but cannot remove it, it says that its in the root, so cannot trash.....:-( I will install the Altivec stuff following their instruction but I don't think that is whats causing the freezes and crashes. I appreciate ur input Tom, and yes the manual is very good but in my case..... Thanks, GAbby |

My recollection is that the Sonnet G4 800 manual gave explicit instructions on how to reinstall Altivec after hardware installation. It requires a OS 9.1 install disk, but you do not have to completely reinstall OS 9.1, just the part with Altivec. Be sure to follow the instructions precisely. Also, you did not mention that you installed the proper system extensions for Sonnet PCI Crescendo CPUs into OS 9.1 (upgraded I believe on their website from the supplied floppy disk I got with my Sonnet G4 800 8 months ago). You should also check your ATI extensions for OS 9.1 - I can't remember the exact procedure. For OS X you should proably remove any Power Logix enablers. Only Sonnet Tune-up, then XPF re-install is necessary, which you have already done. You should be able to remove any file or folder in System/Library while booted into OS 9.1. The instructions for hardware/software installation that came with my Sonnet were very complete. I followed them exactly and had no problems, so perhaps others can help further indentify what could be going wrong for you. Good Luck, Tom |
