Radeon 7000 & 10.2.6 - built in drivers OK? |

First of all - I cannot be more impressed and thankful with Ryan's work! I am running 10.2.6 on a 7300, XLR8 (daystar) G4/350, Radeon 7000 - and everything runs superb. I wiped my drive (9.1 GB Deskstar) before installing 10.2 (ps - NO problems at all w/XPF) and did the OS install. I used Sonnet tune up and then reinstalled XPF extensions (from reading the forums) and never bothered to install the ATI drivers or flash the ROM. Do I need to do either of these last two things at all? - or, if it ain't broke, why mess it up? |

Well on my PTP the combination of the L2 enabler and the PCI Extreme boost is very significant... from butt-slow to a viable option for running Virtual PC and WinMX. Since I DL alot of video, and quicktime crashed and froze in OS 9 consistently, I prefer having the option of force quiting QT if a file (ie. a lame PC AVI file) in Jaguar without having to reboot. I've had zero problems with QT in Jaguar with it enabled. You can remove it easilly enough. Otherwise the 7000 card is pretty stable with default drivers although I installed all the new ones too without a hitch. Solid card, running in the 6th slot on my PTP. The Radeon Mac Edition is supposedly faster if Quartz is your bag, I just bought this before I knew that and am relatively happy with it. |

PCI extreme is a waste of time IMO. It made no noticeable difference here. It also might break some things (like quicktime). Marty |

PCI Extreme is available on VersionTracker or MacUpdate sites. Also get Quartz Extreme Check and run afterwards for verification of enablement. I do use Quartz Extreme on and off (it comes with a spiffy remover), but honestly on my setup I don't notice much difference. PCI extreme? - I must have missed that somewhere. My best guess is some sort of QE enabler... where would I look? |

Don't forget to run PCI Extreme and get the 7000 using Quartz Extreme... my PTP is much smoother with that running. A good OS X acid test of your video card is to download and run either Fluid screen saver at low resolution (64 model resolution, DO NOT go above that), or MarineAquarium, if you're feeling brave and want to see how nice the card is. I found OS 9 runs fines with default ATI extensions, and had some trouble once I did install the October ATI drivers, so the path of least resistance may be a better option. I did get them to work eventually but they aren't dire unless you use OS 9 alot and want to make full use of the card. But yes, XPF is amazing, all the problems I've had are PCI card interactivity problems, and zero installing Jaguar; it's a beautiful thing. Ryan's the man. |

I have the ROM v .208 update - I used it when I had 10.1.5 (I had to do it in OS 9). I switched back after reading some horror stories in xlr8yourmac forums - apparently some people had monitors go completely dark. Again... if it ain't broke... |

You did it exactly right, as far as I know. You do not need any ATI drivers for the Radeon 7000 other than the ones Apple provides in any version of OS X.2 Jaguar, including 10.2.6. In fact, Apple drivers are always more up-to-date than the extensions from the ATI site. I have used the few ATI firmware updates available. No problems there, but no apparent improvements either. The last one was ATI ROM v.208 update, I believe, and it seemed harmless when I flashed it. Tom |
