Problem: severe crashes with Sonnet Crescendo G4/800 Mhz After talking to some ppl and frm this forum I was convinced that their was something wrong with the RAMS that I have. So when I came home and took my machne apart and took out all but one Ram chip and kept testing each time with adding one chip at a time. But to my dismay the system kept crashing, everytime. I was so frustrated that I put my Newer Tech card ( G4 400 Mhz) back. then I thought of trying one more thing that SOnnet Tech support had suggested, that was taking out the other PCI cards I had. So I put my Sonnet card back on, took out the PCI cards that I could do without (I had to leave the Adaptec 29160 LVD SCSI card and the Radeon Mac edition on). And I put one mem chip on and booted the machine....and guess what no more crashes!!!!!!!! So I gradually put the mem chips on one by one and shut off and then booted my machine each time. and no more crashes. So i figured it was my PCI cards, then I had to figure out which one was the culprit. So I did the same with the PCI cards as I did with the mem chips. But as i progressed with the trial and error method of installing the PCI cards I found out that the machine never crashed anymore. In conclusion: it wasn't my Rams, not even the original Power Computing 16 MB rams (two of them still installed). Basically I had to take out all the PCI cards that I could then install the SOnnet card, reset CUDA, boot up, shut down from desktop and re- install the PCI cards. I think the SOnnet card was conflicting with one of the cards but once it was able to set itself up without the conflicting PCI card it was ok to re-install the PCI cards. I still don't know which PCI card was conflicting, but I did notice when I took out the ATI Xclaim VR card and re booted, the Apple Logo(dark gray) with the blinking clock dial (u know which one) showed up before the welcome to Macintosh OS X splash screen. Now that everything is back i donot see the apple logo at start up, but i do see the Welcome to macintosh blue-white splash screen and it hasn't crashed since. Thanks PPl, really U guys r great. My config: PTP (200) with Sonnet Crescendo G4 800 Mhz One 36 GB and one 72 GB LVD drives, one 50 pin original SCSI HD, SCSI CD- R drive, SCSI CD drive, 800Mb RAM, One SCSI internal zip drive (100Mb) PCI cards: ATI Radeon MAC edition (32 Mb), ATI Xclaim VR 4Mb (still have it cause it has Video in and out), Evergreen firewire/ USB PCI card, Creative Soundblaster card and Adaptec 29160 LVD SCSI card. I hope this helps others. Gabby |

Hi Twoolley, willschou1, Thanks ppl, I am really glad it all worked, otherwise my weekend would have been ruined. I have a huge project due next week and I have to use to a lot of Photoshop, infact that is one of the reasons why i got the card in the first place. for the record, no i didn't have buy anything new besides the sonnet card, the mem chips i just re-arranged, which actually i didn't have to, because it never stopped the crashing. re-arranging the PCI cards wasn't even necessary, what was necessary u ask? well i had to take out all the PCi cards that I could do without (i.e. FW/Usb combo card, Creative sounblaster and also ATI Xclaim VR card), I had to leave the SCSi and the ATI radeon card in and re-install the sonnet card and re-boot (reset the CUDA as well) after a successful crashful run, shut down machine put the PCI card back in...thats all. I actually had a similar problem once with a IBM PC as well (yes I do use PC sometimes) where the Modem card was conflicting with the boot, as soon as i took out the Modem card card....viola!!! So important lesson, before messing witht the mem chip paly witht the PCI cards....that simple. another thing i notice under system profile the FW/USB card and the Soundblaster card is not recognized....hmmmmmmmmmmm...... and thanks guys i am not really concerned about the gray Apple logo @ startup, but just curious how it dissapeared when i re-installed the ATI Xclaim card (hint hint) Thanks and have great weekend (its cloudy and rainy in NYC....:-(, at atleast I got my mac working...:-) ) gabby |

Congratulations Gabby, Glad you got it working finally. willschou is right - you can see the Apple during boot process if you select output menu and choose ATYkeyboard in XPF. For the record, did you reorder memory or PCI Cards in the slots when you reinstalled them? This could account for the miraculous disappearance of your former crashes. I am interested in which cards you have in which PCI slots. I keep my Tempo Trio in A1 and the Radeon 7000 in B1. Tom Powertower Pro 250Sonnet G4 800Sonnet ATA Tempo TrioRadeon 7000 |

Glad you got this to work well for you! There is a trick to get the Apple to show up while booting. In OS9.x at the top of the screen in XPFacto open the drop down under advanced. Choice your video card for output (ATI card will be ATY something) and for input choose keyboard.Seems to work everytime. |
