Can someone recommend a good (and inexpensive) 100Base T PCI ethernet card for my Umax S900 (NewerTech G3 333 Mhz)? I am running OS X Server 10.2.6. I thought all ethernet cards were the same, but after buying a "standard" ethernet card at CompUSA, I learned otherwise... :-( --Bondster!! |

Just thought I would follow up on this thread since I first posted... I bought the ZNYX 10/100 Base-T fast ethernet card for my UmaxS900 running OS X 10.2.6 and it has been working flawlessly!! I needed no additional drivers as Mac OS X has them built right into the system. The card even offers an IP Tunneling interface--very nice! All this from weirdstuff.com for only $9.95--a great price! --Bondster!! |

The Asante 696 NIC has been working just fine in my beige Minitower. OWC has also had it listed on the specials page. |

I looked up information for the same thing on Dealmac a while back because I now have a 9600 in my office linked to a network with a PC and wanted to get faster transfers across my network. Of all things, I ended up at the Gateway store and bought a D-Link DFE-530TX 10/100Base-T PCI for something like $20.00 or so including shipping. Drivers are available from their website and the CD that was included also included the Mac drivers. |

Good+Cheap=KNE100TX. I couldn't recommend anything else then this for MOSX. It has the drivers right in Mac OS X itself, no need for additional software except on MOS9.x and below. It is 10/100, works just fine in any PCI Mac. I've been using one for a year now, never had any problems. On the other hand: DO NOT use ANY Realtek RL8139x card. They have seriously buggy drivers that will not be fixed any time soon (ie, almost all my data that came through was corrupted). Also advoid SMC EZ-Cards, as they are the similar 1-chip solution, which I encountered had similar problems where anything over FTP was corrupted (driver problem). The SMC driver was probobly a hacked up RL8139 driver. And, be aware that the Asante FriendlyNet PCI 690 cards (69x in general) have problems running on crowded PCI bus's. I have tried a 690, and 696, both had the same problems. The driver apparently doesn't like any busy PCI bus, if you run something like QE over PCI, the driver causes a Kernel panik and crashes (no problems with the KNE100TX!), or if you are burning a CD over USB PCI, and transferring files over the network with these cards will cause the same kernel panic. Personally.. I'd say any card that is pre-compatible is the best. No driver = No worries. And no more burnt CD's for drivers after a fresh install. KNE100TX cost me $8 total over Ebay. Asante PCI 690 cost me $59 (Canadian), and it works like crap. |

hey thanks Ian, I went to weirdstuff.com and bought the ZNYX card--nice and cheap. And since it allows throughput of 100 Mbit/sec, I am not all too concerned that it is old. SMurray11, if the ZNYX card doesn't work out, I'll be giving you a shout for your cards! --Bondster |

A few weeks ago, I went through a huge debacle about 10/100 NICs. Short story: DO NOT BUY REALTEK There are Mac OS X drivers for them, but RealTek doesn't support them in X on machines that do not natively run X (ie. no XPF Old World Macs). WeirdStuff.com has ZNYX NetBlaster Z345 cards, based on the DEC 21140 chipset for $15 (I bought two.) They are old, but very reliable, and OS X has the drivers built in (look for the "Apple_DEC21x4Ethernet.kext" or its rough equivalent.) RealTek cards have given me problems with AFP and file sharing, and the DEC cards are not a whole lot more expensive than RealTeks. Make sure to get the old chipset, as the new Intel/DEC chips do not work with the Mac. For more info on my machine, visit it at: http://frankenmac.ath.cx |

Hi Try any Realtek RTL8139 based card. I have tried the Surecom and Belkin based ones and they are OK. Download drivers from www.realtek.com.tw on downloads. Exact link is ftp://152.104.125.40/cn/nic/rtl8139abcd8130810xseries/rtsmacx- 10.2.x.zip. Make sure you follow instructions. Also if i recall once I expanded it it had to rename it to pkg or something like that so it would install. Cheers Richard Melbourne, Australia Running PM7300 with Sonnet G4/400/1MB, ATI Radeon 7000 (PC version flashed with Mac ROM), USB Card, 18.2GB UWSCSI Drive with SCA adapter to on-board SCSI, RTL8139 10/100 NIC... |

I have a asante 696 friendlynet 100 base T or a asantefast 10/100 PCI card I'd sell you, 10 bucks + shipping. Both were recognized automatically by Jaguar without the drivers, but I ended up buying another one because I didn't realize my router was blocking the addresses and wouldn't let em online. The 696 is going for 23 on OWC right now, if you'd prefer the warranty and all that. smurray11@nyc.rr.com |
