9600...maken it better |

Greetings... I have been running X with no problems on my 9600/sonnet 800. I am running 2 hard drives on an initio ulw pci card. It has alway been a nightmare with the initio card to install X, but I have learned the dreaded task of flashing the firmware back and fourth to make it happen. I also have an ATI 7000, and a full compliment of pci cards (usb, firwire, etc....). So now I want to add a superdrive (they are so dang cheap) and an ata pci card. In the past to do an install of X, I would always have to go back to the original video card (that is taking up a valuble pci slot), use the original cd drive (I have an external, that wont boot X, and want to put the superdrive in the original internals place), and boot onto the original hard drive to play the flashing firmware game to get X on to one of the initio drives. Has any one with a simalar set up been able to install X with out having to go back to the original stuff? (the video, hard drive, and Cd)? Would I be able to use the superdrive to install X. Does the added ATI card add any more obstacles (like the intio card)? Thanks for your time Eddy |

I am so happy I downloaded the URL from acceler8, took me to the same sight, but gave me directions on how to swap files, run the patch...all in OS9. Because of my Miles card, I hate going to 9 to do anything because it is a pain in the a.....to get back to X. Thanks Eddy |

Macbouduille (spelling?) has a patcher for the DVD player which allows it to run without a DVD drive (or with one the player doesn't like) I think this is the link, but I don't know any french. http://www.macbidouille.com/niouzcontenu.php?date=2002-08-28#3289 Marty |

I have a SIIG card, and you are correct it is being seen as an SCSI. I used paclist to install but I then get a bad bad bad mesage saying "DVD player encountered a serious error, a valid DVD drive could not be found (-70012). I have found some information on Acceler8your mac, but nothing that has worked as of yet. One thing I have not tried involves getting my machine ID to change a file with Hex Edit. Where can I find my machine ID? or can someone tell me what it is 9600/300 Thanks Eddy |

What type/brand of ATA card are you using? If it is an Acard or SIIG then your system sees the 105 as a SCSI drive thus the installer will not let you go on. Many times one can use a shareware called Pacifist to extract the DVD player from the intall disc on a stand alone basis. This will get the player installed because it bypasses Apple's installer script. Good luck. |

Try researching the DVR 105 on www.xlr8yourmac.com to see if there are any reports and tips. |

I have a 9600 with a Sonnet G4/800 CPU and an ATI 7000 graphics card and have never had a problem installing OS X. The graphics card was flashed to the lastest firmware version and has been fine. Best rule of thumb is to go with cards that have a track record of no problems with OS X. Thats why I use Sonnet (though I preferred Newertech, sigh), Adaptec for my SCSI card, ATI, etc. Have you tried by resetting the motherboard which is to remove the PRAM battery for at least 15 minutes to totally reset everything and then try again? Also have you tried different slots for different cards? I have heard the default for the 9600 was the graphics card in slot 3 and the SCSI card in slot 5. Good luck. |
