I successfully installed OS 10.2.6 on my 8500 (with XLR8 G3 upgrade) and everything workes fine until I try to access media files on my external FireWire drive using iTunes or iMovie, etc... As the program is accessing the drive, it hangs on the spinning "ball" and I eventually have to force-restart the computer at which point the Firewire drive does not show up on the desktop until I restart yet again. I am using a Ratoc FW/USB card in one of the PCI slots. I am not sure what kind of a HD it is since it just says "Magic" on the case and it was a 30GB drive I brought from Bottomline Tech when they were still around. Has anyone had a similar problem? I am not sure whether the problem is the HD or the FW PCI card. Any suggestions? When I access files from the internal drive that OSX is on, everything works fine. Thanks, Kevin |

I will try to change the PCI Card slot and see if that helps. I opened the case and the drive is a Maxtor model number 53073U6, manufactured in March of 2000. Any thoughts? The drive was formatted with HDST 3.5. How do I tell if the case is an Oxford-911? Thanks, Kevin |

Moving the fw card to a different slot might be worth a try. Some of the early FW bridge boards are junk also (ie plugs into the drive and converts to FW). I have had very good luck with the FW on my Macally combo card in my Powerwave, and with a generic card in my PTP... Marty |

If it isn't an Oxford-911 case, or if it is one of the early 911's, that would be one reason. If you can open the case, I would. I find that recent drives (IBm 120GXP or later, etc) tend to cooperate better, but that Jaguar itself has some inherent flaws and trouble with FireWire in general. Was the drive formatted with Drive Setup, Disk Utility, HDST 3.5, or something else? |
