Bad CD drive Culprit |

Just a point of interest especially for the 75 - 8500 series machines. After fighting through many attempts to get 10.2 on a friend's machine I discovered the CD drive was bad. It would seem to read disks just fine in OS 9 but when trying to get X to install it would hang at the blue screen and occationally tell me the install had failed. After I replaced the drive with another Apple 4X (600i) drive the install went just fine. The drive I replaced would play music and install some software but when presented with an OSX related disk it would take a long time to read it. I have noticed in the past strange behavior from these machines (like refusing to boot) which seemed to be unrelated to the CD drive but when it was replaced the problem went away. They would work in other unrelated machines (like 6400) but when put back in the 75 - 8500's the problem would return. I now go by " if all else fails replace the CD drive" it is amazing to see how often it works. |
