Hi guys. I really happy with the OS X install utility. I finished my OS 10.2 install and when I reboot, barcode-like markings show up across the grey apple and it never boots. I tried reformatting the HD(seperate HD for OS X install) and reinstalling it. I then get the white "Please restart your computer" sign across my screen during the install process. These are my computer's specs: PowerMac 9600 Sonnet Tech. 700 MHz G4 upgrade card 512MB of RAM ATI Radeon 7000 PCI graphics card I've already tried taking all PCI cards (besides the graphics card)and reinstalling. Nothing has been working for me. Please help!!!! |

Oh, sorry, I forgot to mention that I'm using a Sonnet G3 500 mHz card on my 7600 but went with a Sonnet G4 800 mHz card on the 9600. I'm also using 128 mb RAM DIMM (10 nanoseconds for G3/G4) for installation. Frustrating you know. I called Sonnet and they advised I use their installer of course for whatever, $29.95 or so, but I'd rather join the list and learn something. Hope someone has some helpful info. |

I too have a 9600 300mHz machine with SCSI CD-ROM that will not read CD- R's, so I changed to a SIIG Ultra Pro 100/133 ATA card with a Pioneer 105 DVDR from OWC that I added a Hitachi/IBM 120 mb ATA/IDE hard drive. Both are set up as masters. All other PCI cards were taken out except for the optional video card (12 mb) from Apple. I am able to install OS 9.1 on the IDE hard drive, but after I install Boot-X and extensions to another partition the machine fails to boot. I have used XPostFacto before to install 10.2.6 on a 7600 with two SCSI hard drives and didn't have a hitch. That's the machine I'm writing this on. I tried to add an external CD-RW (HP 9600) but the SCSI probe doesn't see it. Any thoughts? I didn't see how to terminate the CD-RW and it works fine on the external SCSI bus of the 7600. |

You do not need to terminate unpopulated SCSI buses (ie empty). Marty |

Did you ever get OS X to boot? The other thing to try is the other computer bus. Sometimes it won't boot up on the internal bus, but will on the external. When you open your compter laying flat, with the pci slots on your left and the master board on your right, there is a plug on the upper right side of the master board. Plug it into the other receptacle that is either to the left or right of it. Close up your computer and try to start it up again. Prior to 10.2, I was only able to boot from the external bus. Now I can boot from the internal bus. Why I don't know, but I'm happy to be able to use OS X! I too have a 9600 with the Sonnet 700 card. |

Oh and something for the (1) there two SCSI chains in 9600 one internal and one external so you have to terminate both of them |

I had this problem before with my PM9500. Same board as yours. Try three things and I think that you will be fixed. 1) See your SCSI chain in case you do not terminated them. Also if you use ATA cards try to remove any CDs or DVDs on it. (That was my problem) 2) Clear your Pram. with the command option P R combination. 3) Remove all your RAM from the computer and leave only the original in it. If you boot it is a memory issue and so you have to try combination between the RAM you have in order to see the problem. You can also try to run a memory test program as the guage pro found at versiontracker. |
