Well, I'm back home--it was quite an interesting week. It was great to meet some of the OpenDarwin people in person. I can't say very much about Panther because of NDA requirements. But I can say that the next couple of months should be very interesting for XPostFacto development. As usual with major Mac OS X releases, there are some "issues" for me to deal with. But that's OK--it's what I enjoy doing. And you've probably seen the rumors that XPostFacto may be getting some new customers :-) At this point, Panther doesn't work with XPostFacto, so unless you want to debug kernel extensions, don't bother trying. But I'm working on it. I'll let the code do the talking, once it's ready. |

I guess I've always wondered a bit about how to manage user expectations with respect to XPostFacto. I am quite conscious of what voxxdigital says--that even though XPostFacto is free, I have created something which I am inviting people to depend on, so I do need to follow through. With XPostFacto 3, I just underestimated how long it would take to go from "barely working prototype" to "finished application." Plus, some craziness from the day job intervened, and there was some feature creep, etc. There are things about the XPF 3 process that I should have managed better. Once XPF 3 is out, I want to get back to a cycle of many releases with little improvements. I enjoyed that more! And, of course, Panther support is going to be a hugh priority, but at the moment I'm working on getting an XPF 3 beta out the door first, and then I'll turn to Panther support. |

Well Ryan, first of all, thank you for XPF. I'm very glad to use OSX on my old world machines, and that wouldn't be possible without your effort. I'm aware that XPF is free and I'm not supposed to demand anything, but you must agree thet you created a flock of followers here that depends of XPF now... you're kinda responsible for that! ;-) OK, I won't push you, but I must agree with Nick, it would be awesome to see XPF 3 ASAP, even if it had no Panther support yet. I'd love to see Jaguar working on non-G CPUs, even on PPC 603 machines! (BTW, I succesfully installed OSX 10.1.5 on my Performa 6360). You're doing a great job. And yes, I would contribute to XPF development if necessary. -Gil p.s.: update your log!! |

Keep it coming.. And as far as new customers, u got it.. Nogo on the biege as of yet... I am taking the code apart and looking it through, but i think it might be a little over my head. I am hoping that even if it is a small patch, u might figure out the panther for biege thing over anything else that you have been toying with int he workshop. I am happy with A/Ux on my SE30, and Copland onmy performa.. But I would definetley love to get panther working on my main home computer, and get it off my laptop... Especially seeing as I am writing this on panther, fromt he laptop, with panther, running off my firewire drive.. There is something slightly disconcerning about my whole OS running off a wire coming out the side of my laptop.... LOL keep it coming GURU!!! -dc |

I think Ryans reference to "new customers" is due to the fact that Panther will not support the beige G3. |

Stick with it Ryan! I am so very grateful to have been able to use my old powermacs with OSX for the last several years thanks to YOU! Even if you stopped working on XPF today, you have already carried a lot of water in my book. Of course I do agree that audio input on 10.2 would be a superb feature, and FW booting seems like a great addition too. I would also like to have support for my dual processor 604 cards, but feel free to tell me to shut up.... Thanks tons, Marty |

I think what nick.ashton has to say is quite fair, actually. I pretty much deserved that :-) It really is quite true that I have so many "half-finished" features in progress at this point that it has become difficult to focus on getting something out the door. I am very much looking forward to having a new "base" release out, so that I can work on little improvements again, which is much more satisfying for me (and for you, I expect). But I can really only atone with code, rather than words, so I'll get back to it. I suppose all I can add is that I have learned something about the management of software projects in this process, and I'll try to remember what I learned! |

I think panther would be great! next year the bugs wont be worked out of it, you will be hearing of 10.4 if apple keeps going like they have been. But i do agree that at some point the other promised features should be compleated but i would probably use panther and very much love it if i could. i have heard people say it made their G3 systems feel 2 and in some cases 3 times more responcive, i would love that, i would love just to have the new system but if it came with speed like that there would not be a eason to dump $4000 into a new G5, i could wait untill they came down in price and i would also still have a usefull system that i would use. Thanks Ryan. |

Panther sounds nice - but what's the point on an Old World Mac when we still don't have sound input or other features in Jaguar working yet. I agree with Nick - these features are needed now, not in December when Panther is promised. Many of us probably won't buy or use Panther until we also buy new G5 Macs sometime next year when the bugs are worked out of the new system and hardware. In the meantime I would prefer an updated XPostFacto for OX 10.2.x with at least sound input working on my old PowerTower Pro and Firewire booting second. Ryan, I do appreciate how wonderful it has been to explore the marvels of OX 10.2 since its release last September. Without your XPostFacto it wouldn't have been possible. Never mind Panther compatibility (which won't be released until year-end anyway) how about delivering on the features you outlined 6 months ago. I'm worried that you are working on such a spread of objectives that you won't be able to complete any of them. Maybe it's time to be realistic and delay or abandon some of the ports. I'm sure it is great fun to try to get OS X working on a TAM or 6400/6500 but maybe you should step back and assess how many people are waiting for those machines to be supported compared to those waiting for bug fixes on more common platforms or waiting for features like Firewire booting. Personally I'd rather see some of the promised features of XPF V3 delivered sooner rather than see all of them delivered never. Sorry to be so strident but I've begun to get bored with these "jam tomorrow" postings. And before everyone else chimes in, I do appreciate the effort you have put in to XPF and the quality of the resulting software. Indeed I think you deserve some material reward for your efforts so if you want to make V3 a shareware product I'd be happy to contribute (yes I know there are issues with charging for open source software) but why do Sonnet's/Powerlogix/OWC's job for them for free? Please just take a short time to assess where your priorities are and bear in mind that the last released update to XPF was more than 5 months ago. |

Huh... I started having boot issues with OS X CDs starting with the 10.2.3 CDs that Apple shipped out. It would jump to a blank screen... wait for about 10 seconds, then jump back into OS 9. Panther creates the same problem for me. If you are getting something different, it could be my CD drive, but I sort of doubt that... Are you getting anything different from what I am getting, or have you already jumped over my hurdle? |
