Which CD-ROM Devices Work? Workaround? |

My Power Mac 7600 has its original CD-ROM drive still. It is an Apple CD 600i which was manufactured by Sony. I get the "waiting for root device" message when I try to install OS X. Exactly which CD-ROM devices will work with my computer? Is there a workaround available to somehow copy the install CD to a hard drive and install from there? If so, exactly how do I do this? Thank you. |

Hi MonkeyParty, The other thing that you might need to try is to check the SCSI termination of the CD-ROM drive and also make sure that the hard disk that is connected at the end of the SCSI cable is terminated. OS X is very particular about SCSI termination. "Waiting for root device" can be caused by OS X is unable to locate the CD-ROM drive / Installation CD due to improper SCSI termination. Hope this help, Marcus |

I cloned the CD manually to a separate partition on my HD and managed to install OSX in a truly unsupported machine, a Performa 6360 woth original PPC 603. What I did is to drag tha CD icon directly to the destination HD icon, so it copied the hidden files too. Then the HD contents was a folder called "Mac OS X Install" - in which the hidden files became visible. Then I dragged all these files from this folder to the same HD's root level and it was ready to install OSX. |

Thanks for the information. I went out and bought an 8X CD drive and it gave me the same error. I was not aware of the CD drive failures in this family of machines. The original CD drive worked fine for years and obviously the "new" used one has problems already. I guess there must be a problem unrelated to the drive itself. Is there somewhere I might find Apple Software Restore? It sounds like my best option. Thanks. |

A 600i is a perfectly good drive to use for install BUT..... This is something I have posted about a couple of times. In this family of machines the CD drives can fail in strange ways. I can appear to be working but the machine can exhibit interesting problems.. like occasional failure to boot, failure to read good disks, and locking the machine up during startup are just a few. Just when you suspect the drive it starts to work. Pick up another say from ebay they are cheap, you could even go with an 8 or 12X. The 600i may work just fine in another machine. I know this sounds confusing but I have run into this problem several times and switching the CD drive seems to fix it most of the time. Hope this Helps Jim |

You need a small app called Apple Software Restore, version 2.1.3a10c2 , which for some odd reason is hard to find . With it you can clone a CD to a HD and install from the HD. |
