http://discussions.info.apple.com/ WebX?14@234.gMGmabU3afN.149566@.59972b98 this is a post over at the Apple forums thay tells you how to increace the system vnodes and that should reduce the length and number of spinny beachball things. (the artical says you should have 512MB of ram to do this because if you don't, you need RAM.) http://arstechnica.infopop.net/OpenTopic/ page?a=tpc&s=50009562&f=8300945231&m=2750945575 That is a site that explans what you are actually doing, i am reading it now :) i have not had any problems nor any beachballs, but i don't get them to often anyway, so if you have a big problem with them try it. |

sudo vi /etc/rc opens it in the terminal using the vi application. use the arrow keys to navigate down to the correct place* to enter the text, then hit "i" (brings you to insert mode) and enter it. then hit esc to get back to command mode, then hit :w! to save and then :q to quit vi. it returns you to a command prompt. * ## # Start the virtual memory system. ## ConsoleMessage "Starting virtual memory" (((((((i added this part, this is where you type the code))))))) swapdir=/private/var/vm if [ "${netboot}" = "1" ]; then     sh /etc/rc.netboot setup_vm ${swapdir} fi the ## mark is like a comment, it makes the line turn into notes that do not get processed by the computer. ##By Cmr can be anything, i put my initials in, ## By JSS. |

Terminal command worked great for me, was wondering if any knows how to make this change permanent. The command line below is supposed to make this happen but doesn't or I am doing something wrong: ## by cmr /usr/sbin/sysctl -w kern.maxvnodes=68800 ## end cmr swapdir=/private/var/vm if [ "${netboot}" = "1" ]; then     sh /etc/rc.netboot setup_vm ${swapdir} fi Any help would be greatly appreciated..... Thank you, Jim |

http://arstechnica.infopop.net/OpenTopic/ page?a=tpc&s=50009562&f=8300945231&m=2750945575 I hope i took the space out, this link just tells you what you are doing. it is in the forum and a bunch of guys tell you what it is. it is basically allocating more RAM to the system for small files that stay in the RAM while the system is running, eventually the space in the ram runs out and it now has to go back to the hard drive or reprocess something unnecessarily each time it does it. By increasing the number you give the let the system store more of these files so that you don't have to go back to your hard drive for the information. I i did like the article about the 970, after reading his first one i was disappointed with the altivec implementation on the 970, but this one cleared that up. |

x'20' = blank (space) and I didn't see any spaces. There is a space in the ars link but I didn't look at that. (good review of interview with IBM engineers today) |

You need to remove the embedded space within each of the URLs. But they're valid. |

it does not make them disappear but they do not spin for as long anymore and there are a few less than before i enabled it. it is a simple thing to do and i would recommend it. |
