Can't Install OS 10.2 |

Any help would be appreciated, I can not get OS 10.2 installed on my Power Tower Pro. (See specs for computer at the bottom), Here are the steps I have gone thru: First, I initialized a 9 Gig target hard drive using Apple Drive Setup. I then moved the Xpostfacto folder to this target hard drive and ran it. Xpostfacto then successfully copied it's components to the target drive. The failure occurs when the system attempts to reboot in OSX from the OX 10.2 Install CD in the CD drive. It seems to go into an endless cycle of attempted reboots. No error messages are given. When I reboot in Verbose mode (Command V) I still do not get any error messages. I have experimented with various "throttle settings" - with no success. Please help. Frustrated in Jersey Here are the stats on my computer: Power Tower Pro Running OS 9.1 (which boots from of a drive different than the "target" OS 10.2 drive. Newer Tech 500 mhz G3 upgrade card 384 mb of Ram The target(9 Gig) hard drive was initialized using Apple Drive Set-up My CD Rom has FWB drivers ?? |

If you are new to the forums here the posts are backwards, its second from the bottom. The JackHammer is the SCSI card that he has been using, i think that you may just be a little confused with the odd set up of this forum. RE: Can't Install OS 10.2 July, 20, 2003Â 5:46 PM powderhaus . do this using Apple Software Restore (run a search for it on you hard drives, it may also be on the OSX CD) then recover the CD to a DIFFERENT partition, you may have to make a 700MB partition from your 9 GB one. The CD ROM will not boot if it needs FWB software. It may work once you get OSX installed but will probably not be able to play music. that is what i said. |

Thanks Marty and Voxxdigital for your help. I will first try hooking up my SCSI drives directly to the motherboard. Then, if I have no other showstoppers and I can actually get OSX going, I will consider buying a SCSI host adapter. I'll report back in a few days. |

The FWB he refers to is coming from the firmware on his Jackhammer SCSI card... This card is as far as I know a showstopper. You will need to either hook your SCSI drives directly to the motherboard SCSI bus, or better, get a bootable UW SCSI host adapter. The ATTO express PCI PSC is 1 that works well, the Adaptec 29160N is another. The Atto UL2D also works OK, but some versions of firmware seem to have problems based on others reports. Sorry, if someone reading this actually has experience with the jackhammer on XPF please chime in! Marty |

FWB??? Is your HD formatted with FWB's Hard Disk Toolkit? Only Apple- formatted drives are valid. At which point did you get the error, anyway? Vertical lines? Ouch... |

mjoecups358 - YES, I am using a Jackhammer SCSI card. You indicate that will be a problem. Is this a showstopper ? Is there any kind of a workaround ? Replace it with ______ ? My guess (and hope) is there there are quite a few Power Tower Pro users who have coverted to OSX and whose computer started out with a Jackhammer SCSI card. Thanks for your help ! |

Are you using a jackhammer SCSI card by any chance? That is gonna be your problem if you are. Marty |

Progress... By using SOFTWARE RESTORE, I was able to successfully move the contents of the Install CDS to a partition on my 9 Gig. This enabled me to finally run XPF. This partition is no longer "greyed out" when I select it to "Start Mac OSX From". Great. I now have my first error message. I can't read it very well because my screen is chuck full of vertical black lines (??). The error message which repeats over and over is something like "CAN NOT OPEN FWB..." Does anyone have any idea what this message means ? After about 20 seconds, my computer then boots into OS 9.1 I'm guessing OSX is having trouble with my ultra scsi card. I am going to try the external bus next. Thanks all for your help. Any thoughts on the above would be greatly appreciated. I'm off for vacation for a week so I won't be able to try your suggestions until I'm back. In this battle to get OSX installed, "this may not be the beginning of the end, but it surely is the end of the beginning". |

Hmmm.... shoudn't be that difficult. My Performa is not even supported (not even supposed!) and it worked like I described, just dragging. Ermm, have you tried to make XPF install the patched extensions in the partition you copied the CD? This is really a wild guess, I didn't tried this myself. Is your drive IDE? How many partitions does it have? Which partition is the CD image and which partition are you trying to install to? |

Thanks voxxdigital for the explanation of how to move the install CD files to the "root". I have moved all of the files from both install CDs to the root of my hard drive as you have described - but still no go. As described above, when I start up XPF, and try to select the 9 GIG partition as the "Start Mac OSX From" disc, I get a message that says: "9 Gig is not bootable, Mac OSX is not installed" DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY OTHER IDEAS ON HOW TO BOOT/INSTALL OSX FROM MY HARD DRIVE ? I read somewhere that I should use SOFTWARE RESTORE to move the contents of the install CDs to my hard drive. (I used the simple drag method to copy the files.) Do you think I should start over and move the contents of the Install CDs using SOFTWARE RESTORE ? If yes, how do I get SOFTWARE RESTORE to start up ? When I click on it's icon I get the message, " Cannot find any configuration to restore". To quote Winston Churchill, a former Macintosh power user, "installing OSX is a riddle wrapped in an enigma shrouded in mystery. Thanks |

Root level is the lowest level in the HD directories, i.e, not inside any folder. When you first double-click on the HD icon and a window pops up, showing what is inside the HD, this is the root level (in a PC would be "C:") When you double-click in the icon of the HD you copied the CD's, you will probably see two folders, corresponding to disc 1 & disc 2 (I used only one disc, OSX 10.1.2). When you double-click on the disc 1 folder (Mac OS X Install or whatever) a second window opens, right? Just select all the contents from this second window and drag it to the first window. Therefore, when you first double-click the HD icon you will now see all the files tha were inside the first disc folder, like as if it was the install CD itself. I believe you can do this with the secon CD too, if system asks to replace some files whose name begins with a dot, no problem. But honestly, since the system does not boot from the secon CD, I'd try with the first folder only. If doesn't work, try with both folders's contents in the root level. |

Thanks everybody for your help - but I still do not have OSX working. Here are my latest steps based on your advice: I have copied the contents of both install CDs to a new partition of my 9 Gig hard drive. I then moved all of the files OUT of the newly created folders called "Mac OSX Install Disc 1" and "Mac OSX Install Disc 2" Voxxdigital - did the above step move these files to the "root" (there are no other files on this partition) ? (I guess I'm not totally sure what "root" means.) I then started up XPF, but when I tried to set the 9 GIG partition as the "Start Mac OSX From" disc, I get the message that says: "9 Gig is not bootable, Mac OSX is not installed" Huh - I seem to be in a Catch 22 Thanks again for everyone's input. If I win the lottery, I will share it equally with all of you ! |

I installed Jaguar on B&W, then moved the drive to 7300, G3/500, ran XPF to reinstall BootX and Extensions, off we went. UL3S, two Atlas 10K IIIs. |

I could succesfully install OS X in a Performa 6360 just copying the CD contents (including the invisible files) to the root level of a separate partition on my HD. To do so, I just dragged the CD icon into the destination HD icon - (the CD contents became a folder in the root level of the HD) - then dragged all the files inside the created folder to the root level of the same HD they were copied to (here the invisible files becomes visible!) Then set XPF to install FROM the HD partition you copied the CD to. It worked perfectly for me, and even SCSI CD-ROM worked fine under OSX. Seems the problem was the boot itself. |

Why don't you try copying OSX to another partition (root) and install from HD? |
