Hello: I am grateful this forum exists. It is my hope my few questions can be answered. I appreciate your assistance with the following: In my attempts to install Jaguar (10.2) to my Mac clone, I have developed a severe problem with installed memory. My PowerCenter no longer reports that I have 512 mb of Ram (4 - 128mb DIMMS). Instead, 384 mb of Ram is noted. Please keep in mind that before my Jaguar installation attempts, all four of my DIMMs were seen and functional. I have spare 128mb DIMMs which I have swapped with my installed DIMMs. The problem still persists. What can I do to make my computer see all four DIMMs in place? The following is my computer setup: -Power Computing PowerCenter -Sonnet Crescendo PCI G4/800 -512 mb Ram Dimms -Internal 36gb IBM Ultra Star with 80 to 50 pin adapter. Drive has 3 partitions. It has been formatted with Intech Hard Disk Speed Tools 3.5. -Internal 50 pin Apple 12x CD-ROM -ATI Radeon 7000 Mac Edition PCI Card -Sonnet Tango Firewire/USB PCI Card (1st generation) -Adaptec 29160n SCSI PCI Card attached to 2 external LVD drives: 68gb Maxtor Atlas and 18gb Seagate. The 68gb Maxtor Atlas has 1 partition and has been formatted with Apple Drive Setup. The 18gb Seagate has 3 partitions and has been formatted with Intech Hard Disk Speed Tools 3.5. This problem became evident when I initially attempted installation of Jaguar using Sonnet PCI X and later XPOSTFACTO. My three PCI slots were full and I was booting Jaguar from my internal CD-ROM drive. Installations have not been successful. I experienced panics attacks. In trying to resolve my memory loss, I have multiple times Zapped my PRAM and pressed the CUDA button. Still memory is missing. I have made several tests, with different hardware configurations installed, including: -When I have my Newer Technology G3 300mhz upgrade card installed and all 3 PCI slots are full, the 512mb of Ram is seen. -With my Sonnet G4/800 card installed and all 3 PCI slots are full, the computer will either not boot up in Mac OS 9 or will report a loss of memory. -At times I now experience conflicts between my Adaptec PCI Card and my Tango PCI Card installed, which prevents the computer to sucessfully boot up to Mac OS 9. -When I replace one of the four 128 Dimms with a lower capacity RAM chip like 64mb, The computer boots fine with the G4/800 card and all 3 PCI slots full. Please keep in mind my entire setup worked flawlessly before my attempts with Jaguar and both MAC OS installers. My issue with my memory is very important to me. At this time, I have not successfully installed Jaguar in my PowerCenter. And, for the moment, I have decided to suspend my actions in getting it installed. Once this issue is resolved, I will get back to this forum with my Jaguar installation inquires. What could be prventing my computer from recognizing my 512mb of Ram? Has my 128mb DIMMs become defective? Has my memory slots on my mother board become defective? Is Sonnet PCI X and/or XPOSTFACTO software directly/indirectly responsible for my memory loss? And yet, all four DIMMs are functional with my Newer Technology G3 300mhz upgrade card installed. What are your thoughts and suggestions to my problem? Sincerely, Neil |

For G3 & G4 upgrades to PowerMacs, 2224 buffering of memory is suggested for successful use of the RAM. This usually entails purchasing new DIMMs with the required buffering since Jaguar and G4's require more precise RAM. I presume that you were running OS 9 before this happened and had not just upgraded to 9. I would be suspicious that one of your DIMM's is faulty, but you report that you've swapped out a DIMM with spare memory which is also 128 mb. I also had a problem with RAM being recognized by ASP after upgrading a PowerMac 7500 with 7600 mobo with a Sonnet G3 500 mhz card. I would remove the fancy 128 mb DIMM's I had bought and replaced them with the old 8 mb DIMM's that were original ... after doing that and rebooting several times in OS 9.22, I noted that the 8 mb DIMM's were being seen, so I replaced the old 8 mb DIMM's with the 128 mb DIMM's and ASP now saw the correct configuration in OS 9 under "built in memory". I did this one at a time, since it wouldn't work if I tried it all at once. I don't know why it worked, just did. My 9600 gave problems of a completely different nature. |

I have also seen posted here that PowerCenter machines like FPM RAM instead of EDO. Apparently, even though they are supposed to support EDO, they are some issues with stability. I have not played with a powercenter yet, so I can't say for sure, there are others on this forum that know more about your particular machine. |

Sounds like one of your 128 sticks might be a little flakey. For extrme upgrades like the g4 800, RAM should all be the same manufacturer. I upgrade beige macs as a side hobby/buisiness and I have seen RAM that works great on a g3 400 PCI card, bomb on an 800. I fixed the prob by getting all new ram. |
