Random freeze in screensaver only |

I gotta say, if this is the least of my problems then all is pretty OK... Setup: PM 7300 XLR8 G4 350, 288MB interleaved RAM (L2 removed), Radeon 7000, IBM 9GB SCSI, XPF 2.2.5 b7, did the XPF / Sonnet / XPF thing for L2, and 10.2.6. 95% of the time things run like silk, but every once in a while I get a freeze / hang in the screensaver only. It happens with SkyFly, Illuminex, and Flurry, and it happened with 10.1.5 (I THINK???). The "three key" restart brings everything right back, but the freeze is a picture in progress. Any thoughts? |

Well, it did happen again just a little while ago in Flurry - oh well, I guess that considering all the things that I am doing that "I am not supposed to" an occasional screensaver freeze is bearable. I just never leave any "mission critical" stuff unsaved and let the screensaver kick in. It is really on the order of once every few weeks or so - in fact, it kinda reminds me of good old OS 9 (sorry!)... |

I had many strange freezes when I had my XLR8 card installed. First thought is to de- interleave the RAM - that seems to really help with XLR8 cards. I wasn't able to get complete rock solid stability until I upgraded to a Sonnet G4800 card. With this card I was able to re-interleave my RAM and have not seen any of the freezes I was getting with the XLR8 card. In my opinion, the XLR8 cards don't play as nicely with OS X as other cards, with Sonnet being one of the best (and fastest) :) BTW, this is another topic you probably could have easily found the answer to if we had a search function here. The thread I started when I had my XLR8 card installed is buried so far back that I have not been able to find it. |

Oh - I did flash the ROM (I had to use 9 back then cause I was still at 10.1.5) but after reading the forums I flashed it back. This problem is really one of those vexing "occasional" ones, athough I am glad to see that I am not alone. |

I browsed XLR8yourmac for a while as well - the gist that I got was that I should not use the ROM update or ATI drivers if I am using 10.2.6. I have to say - this has not happened since I started this post, so maybe... BTW - the only major change is that I FINALLY got DSL, and with a 1390k downstream (yah - I'm Happy!) I may find it easier to go back and browse the forums there too. I honestly cannot imagine that it was some network or port related issue; after eight years up dialup I had to shout... My post was something like "Radeon 7000 and 10.2.6 - built in drivers ok?" about three pages back |

One more thought, what firmware update is on that 7000 card??? I have been running the October '02 update without little difficulty, I have heard that the earlier versions can have some issues...I believe there is some info on this forum, BUT, since it is not searchable, you have to dig. Here is a link to some more info... http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/Graphics/ati_oct_2002_driver_update.html This article cautions using the 10/02 update (mostly for beige g3's, but my 9500 seems to like it. There is a 12/02 (v208) update, but mine isn't broken, so nothing to fix (i think you can understand...) |

Hmmmm....... Not sure at this point.....my instincts are telling me that if everything else is good, might be something with the video/quartz subsystem. Can you view mpeg or QT video on your machine without any difficulty?? Does this just happen with certain screensavers?? If it does, might have some open GL issues/bugs in the offending screensavers, or in your install of open GL (comes in jag install). http://search.info.apple.com/index.html?q=opengl&lr=lang_en&search=Go There is some info here as a start, but you have me scratching my head on this one..... |

jseibyl Yup - I had a 2GB seagate partitioned into two 1GB drives - 9.1 for use, 9.2 (OS9 helper) for classic, and the 9GB IBM for OSX. When the seagate died, I wiped the IBM and installed 9.1, XPF and OSX right as 10.2.6. I never use OS9; in fact, when the seagate died, all i had running for a while was the IBM with 10.1.5. If I needed 9, I booted from a CD with 9.1 and from that, booted 10. I did get an error right before restart, but everything worked! BTW, I wiped the IBM because I messed up the disk using Norton to "fix" things - the disk size grew smaller and smaller, as far as it knew. A low level wipe made everthing whole again... |

Just remembered, my chip is g4 800 with L3 cache, dont know if L2cache utility will work for me. Currently using sonnet enabler for L3. Damn work, gets in the way, makes me spk like neanderthal.....:-) |

I had the same problem. Increasing the clock ratio in L2CacheConfig seems to have solved it. |

I have heard mixed things about PCI Extrm. The only issue it gives me now is artifacts while video starts. They go away after the vid starts to play, but still annoying. I use 9.2 for all my vid stuff. I do like the speed increase of the dock, windows, screen savers, etc, so for now I am running it. Another small price to pay for X on this machine, but WELL worth it. |

I didn't now you could have BOTH on one partition, I gotta think that might be the root (pun intended):-) of the issue. I know this is a stupid question, but DID this happen when you had two partitions?? |

OH, BTW, it is the only drive, but I never use OS9 that is on it. I know... two drives or partitions... but - I have used one single partitioned drive, one dual partitioned drive, and two seperate drives with equal success. |

Interesting... I did use PCI Extreme to enable QE (see my earlier post about 7000 Drivers OK?), but I was not sure that it did more harm than good. When I reboot, it does a fsck and repair automatically, although I suppose that I could use verbose mode and watch. Would I really learn anything useful, though? |

How is that is that IBM partitioned off? Is it the only drive? I wonder if it has to do with the quartz engine........I had some similar probs on my 9500 until I took it to Jaguar and enabled quartz extreme for my 7000 card and the problem went away, though not sure if it was Jag or PCI Extreme or a combo of both that fixed it..... |

Oh sorry one more thing....each time you get a freeze, you need to run /sbin /fsck because each time is crashes it leaves a bunch of stuff that needs to be repaired. I will try to note what it repairs next time it happens. |

Hi, I have been running X on my 9600 with no problems except for the one you described above. The only time I get a freeze is when the screen saver is on, no ryme or reason. I did have my hard drive set to sleep, but thought that my be the problem so I changed it to not sleep. I can even get a freeze if I use the test button in the system preference pannel. 9600 sonnet 800 g4 initio miles u2w scsi acard ati 7000 firewire/usb card |

No, I did all of the recommended things - including turning off display sleep, system sleep, and hard drive sleep in the energy saver control panel. It is one of those vexing "sometimes" things... |
