Need some help people I've been running OSX 10.2.6 for some time now on a PowerMac 8500 w/Sonnet G3/450. My main boot disk is a 36GB IBM Ultrastar (SCA 80 to 50 converted) formatted with Apple Drive Setup and my second boot disk is OS9.2.2 on a Connor 4 GB Drive. Both drives are internal, the IBM is SCSI 0, terminated and at the end of the internal bus. The Connor and Apple CD are also on the bus and unterminated. All SCSI IDs are unique. We had a couple of power hits yesterday but everything seemed fine afterwards. This morning it also powered up and shut down okay. This afternoon when booting it went into OS9 on the backup HD. There is no sign of the 36GB IBM. Disk First Aid doesn't see it, Drive Setup doesn't see it, Norton Disk Utility (Systemworks 1) doesn't see it. SCSI Probe does show the IBM at SCSI ID 0 but will not mount it. Message is: Trying device 0.0.0: FAILED: SCSI error -7932 (2) Sense: 64 (128) Trying device 0.0.1: FAILED: Logical units not supported Looking for any suggestions... Help! |

Drive air flow requirements and temperature thresholds are documented in all hard drive installation manuals. The OEM manuals are especially useful. You should attempt to claim warranty on your drive anyway. Use some mini fans to cool off your drives, or else they'll fail in the same way. Do not use half-height disks inside your 8500 because they prevent proper airflow. I know there are quite a few drives on sale nowadays, but these are mostly half-height. Use an external box with good airflow. Almost all versions greater than 2.0 of FWB's HardDisk Toolkit has a utility that shows you a drive's mode pages and defect lists. |

Hi tempest, I've been running it for about six months. And yes, it is hot!!! I didn't realize it was that hot until I was experimenting with it in an open external enclosure last night. I don't have additional fans in the 8500 so it seems like the drive may have baked itself. I wonder if that will affect the warranty. OTOH there was no mention that it would run extremely hot and that additional cooling was required. I've tried mounting the drive several times since it was powered down for the afternoon so I know it started cool. Still no go so there may be no hope for it. I don't know whether I have a copy of FWB Configure. I do have an old version of HD Toolkit so I'll check to see if I can learn anything useful. Not exactly sure what I'm looking for but I'll probably be posting again. I've also posted a question to the Hitachi support page (they bought IBM's drive business). We'll see what they have to say. |

How long have you had your IBM in your system? The Ultrastars run very hot--anything greater than 2GB will run hot, as in too hot to touch, and without any active ventilation, they will die prematurely due to heat. The 8500's tight quarters excerbates this potential problem. I have experienced this with a 4GB Quantum many years ago. If your Ultrastar is a half-height (rather than 1/3-height) it will be even worse. It's very likely the power surges you've recently experienced put the drive over the edge. My 8500 has mini fans mounted against its 2 internal disks (18GB and 36GB). My hotter Ultrastar 36Z15 is mounted right below the floppy bay and I also have that bezel removed. What you can do. 1. Power off your 8500, take its cover off, and wait several hours, or maybe even a day, then try booting up into OS 9 and see if the unit mounts. If it does, your problem is heat-related. If it doesn't then I'm afraid your Ultrastar has reached the end of its useful life. On the chance that it does mount, don't hesitate and copy any files you wish to save to another disk. 2. Get a hold of FWB's Configure and check out the drive's mode page 0 to see if it isn't hosed. Even though the Disable Unit Attention jumper may be grounded, you may want to check what the actual mode page says. Also take a look at the unit's growth defect list. They normally have 0 entries on a healthy drive, but if there is something wrong with the unit, it will be non-zero, and will grow quickly, like new entries within hours rather than months. Primary will normally be non-zero. |

Thanks Nick, I've pulled the drive and put in an external enclosure and hooked it to the external SCSI bus and also reinstalled it to the internal bus. so its not a bad connection. Its starting to sound like it may be toast. Most of the data is backed up or recoverable with some degree of effort and the drive is under warranty so I guess that is the route I am forced into. BTW, where did you get the info for the error codes? I have been looking for that. |

Just a follow-up on those error codes. Error -7932 means the drive controller reported back to your system that it had encountered an error. Sense code 64 means "Logical Unit not ready" That could be for one of several reasons, failure to spin-up can be ruled out since you can hear the drive spinning, a jammed head servo could be one possibility or it could be a mechanical or electronic component failure. Doesn't sound too hopeful I'm afraid. If the drive contents aren't backed up then you could try a specialist disk recovery service but otherwise it's probably a question of replacing the drive and reinstalling everything. Hope it's under warranty. |

I'd suggest opening up your system and reseating the SCSI cable to the drive in case it's just a bad contact. If that doesn't help then it sounds like a hardware fault on the drive controller which may not be recoverable. |

Thanks for the suggestions. I do have Techtool Pro 3.0.5 (had to restore from a backup CD) and it doesn't see the drive either. Interestingly, though, the drive sounds normal. It spins up and if you know the Ultrastar you would recognize the Idle Time Function which "squeals" about once a minute while updating a log file. Doesn't show up in anything but SCSI Probe though, and then is it not mountable. Any other thoughts?... Anyone? |

Norton things have always been not so good so i would recomend getting TechTool Pro 3/4. But alot of people will say get Diskwarrior, i had no luck with it but only ever used it once. You MAY also be able to get a trial version of Hard Disk Speed Tools and reformat the drive if the information on the drive is not worth the money for diskWarrior or TechTool Pro. I think the utilities are good to have anyway, TechTool Pro is a much more full program but i don't think it covers where DiskWarrior is best, that being directory information and that is a very likly problem after a power outage. |
