SCSI and ATA thoughts |

I have seen some threads concerning the partition size of an X install, etc, and some discussions of if a scsi partition will work or not if it is larger than 8 gig, etc. Since we know that the size of an ATA partition should be smaller than 8 gig, and I am all scsi, I figured I would offer some thoughts of my latest scsi fun. I got a FULL size "big posterior" factory reurb Seagate elite 47 drive from EBay for 25 bucks. The drive when formatted is ~43 gigs. Not the fastest, but built for the long haul, and I wanted to get a BOOTABLE backup of my Jag install. Since I have 4 internal HD's now, and this thing would not fit into my 9500, I figured the best way to do it is to put it on the external mobo scsi connector, again speed is not the issue, I know that bus is slow, but I figured that was my best bet to make the backup bootable. Okay, I have a drive enclosure on the way, but I am into instant gratification, so I took an old external half height drive, opened it up and connected the new drive up, to see if the drive would even spin up. It worked great, X saw it, formatted it to ONE partition, and fired up CC Cloner(2.1.6). Cloner worked, no prob, but the real test would see if it booted. At the first run, no. No prob, I booted back into my 9.2.2, opened up XPF, choose the "reinstall boot extensions" to this new drive, and selected it as the boot device. JAG booted right up. Happy, but not completely convinced, I tried a cold boot, and it worked again. I ran through some apps, Classic mode, etc, and it seems everything is working well. I still have some testing to do, but I feel good that I can boot this drive in case my other one decides to commit suicide. Not sure if this is usefull to anyone, but figured I would offer it up. The external drive is actually faster than I though it would be. |

I was thinking of doing a mass bulk sale, but there is ALWAYS something I need that I have not used for a while, so I hang onto it. I do mac upgrades as a side hobby/biz. I know a few graphics people who don't want to let go of their macs, and I have some friends at a community college who don't know the difference between FPM or EDO, so it is a nice little home biz. Haven't got a clone to work on yet, most are 8500, 9500, or 7300. Sometimes, with the way they are configed I am amazed they work at all! |

Yeah, I have quite a collection of SCSI adapters and drives myself. Luckilly, all of that stuff gets cycled through a Power Center Pro and a Beige G3 that I have running linux. One as a file server and the other a database and web server. That's the best use I can think of for it all now since I probably would not get much for them on e-bay. |

Fair 'nuf, You certainly won't see me waving the SCSI banner into battle against the teeming hoards of the ATA hoards..... I have been flipping ID's, terminating drives, and mishmoshing scsi connectors for a long time, so I have a good stock of oddball adapters, connectors, cables, external devices, mini-figgie drive jumpers, regular jumpers, and the usual box o parts, that resides in my computer room closet that is all SCSI, including a few drives. Turned out to be actually CHEAPER for me to stay SCSI, if I didn't have all that crap around, I would have probally gone ATA. My entire "old world mac" project is focused on doing what I want to and spending as little as possible to do it. I am saving for a dualie G5, love to play with the serial ATA...... So far, with the help of forums like this, AND XPF, I am actually amazed that my 9500 can still run with the pack..... |

Since you mentioned ATA in the heading I have to say that I have become partial to ATA over SCSI. I never thought I would but for more than a year now I have been completely ATA, except for my backup SCSI drive. It was a 4GB DCHS UW drive and now it is a 9GB Ultrastar UW drive. I have a complete install with all of my apps that sits unpowered in my Power Tower Pro until I need to restore my installation to my 80GB Western Digital SE drive. OSX resides in a 20GB partition on that drive. I use CCC to clone the backup to the boot partition. With the advent of Firewire and DV cameras I found that I had no need for SCSI as DV capture only require 4MB/s throughput on the target drive. In day-to-day usage ATA drives are plenty fast for me and I no longer have to troubleshoot SCSI conflicts or worry too much about cabling. |

Marty, Just trying to have a little fun with "big ass"....okay I tried it....feels good :-) I would like to get a faster card, I have a 2940. I got a pc 29160N, but have had no luck flashing it to power domain... rjenness.... I saw your threads about your loss and I mourn with you :-(, I had a nice refurb Ultrastar 10K RPM drive on my 2940 card when I first got into XPF, one day it decided to spin down for no particular reason. I could remount it, so I figured an ID thing, or connector, etc.... The next day when I booted to troubleshoot, it made some nice loud clicks and nearly shook the entire case apart(it was just sitting on the bottom of the case on a square of Lexan with screws in the bottom mount holes for feet). I knew at that point I had a small drive issue. I am glad most of your stuff is backed up, I had to learn the hard way......lost most of what I had. |

And my IBM Ultrastar was working fine as a 36GB single partition OSX boot drive until yesterday (see separate thread). |

Yeah, that's exactly how I make my bootable backup with XPF. No problem at all with SCSI drives up to 18G here. It's ok to say "big ass". Try it. Although "big posterior" is funnier :~) Marty PS I like to use faster SCSI cards ATTO express PCI PSC, ATTO Ul2D, Adaptec 29160N. |
