Hi, I have a PowerMac 6500/225/128mb ram/d-link enet card (both in and out) trying to install 10.0. have tried copying cd to hard drive and or ASR while running 2.2b9 and also 2.2.5 boot from cd which is recognized, but get to point where it stops and says "/etc/master.password: permission denied" with both methods. I have tried three different hard drives. It passes a point where it says auto reboot in progress and then copies lots of file in and out. A few other lines of code then stops here. Anyone got any clues as to what this means? Thanks, Pat |

Well, I tried that. But I don't seem to have a 68k rom image and can't seem to find one on the internet anywhere. So I guess i'll have to wait some more for that little project. It did sound like fun though. |

of course, since the emulator is for 68K machines, you are limited with software to the NON power PC stuff, that is why I am running Photoshp 4, the last NON power PC version. I really don't use it for anything other than amusement, since I have all my work stuff on my 9500, and am not limited there to pre PPC stuff...... Yes, I am running 6.7 on my install of X on my 9500. I don't use it for anything, just wanted to see if it worked. I pulled a ROM from a MAC IIcx I have lying around. You can also do things with BEOS, Linux, and other flavours of Unix, that is why it works on open BSD Jaguar and I have played with it in x11, works fine there. |

Basilisk does NOT runs any PowerPC program, let's state this very clearly. Besides of that, it's quite funny, however, you have to be used to stay with legacy software too. And there is a Mac OS X version of Basilisk II, so you can have a "Legacy" environment besides of "Classic" environment. As far as I have heard of, Basilisk II can run even some versions of UNIX for the 68k including a quite snappy X-Window. It's very much like VirtualPC. |

hey, noticed you are a pc user. Not sure if you know this, but you can run OS 8.1 on a PC through an emulator called "Basilisk II". I have an AMD homebuilt that I threw a shortcut into the startup folder that starts up normally as a PC, but turns into a MAC at full screen! Great for impressing your prop-head friends... :-)(especially if they are hard core MAC people)It uses disk images, and will install programs. I have Photoshop 4 for MAC running in it in addition to other stuff. http://www.uni-mainz.de/~bauec002/B2Main.html It can only support up to OS 8.1, the last NON-power PC OS, and you need to find a legacy MAC ROM somewhere, but the doc is good. Not really usefull if you own a MAC, but it is loads of fun to tinker with, and runs all my old games just great. Oh yes, it is FREE!! You can do other things with it, I have it running OS 6.7 in my install of X on a machine that is not supposed to run either, my trusty 9500. I have also been succesful running the macmame emulator (video games) through my emulation of OS 8.1 on my PC. All this is just completely stupid, but a lot of fun! My next completely stupid and useless trick will be to attempt to run BEOS on the PC, then run Basilisk through BEOS and then see if I can get macmame to run. What the hell...... I know this does not address your issue at all, but I had to throw this in as that is how I started to come back to the MAC side. I played with Basilisk, then decided to hit ebay cuz I wanted a real MAC. The rest is history. |

That is funny because believe it or not I had a K6-2 200 with XP installed. It ran slow but was functional. I would still have it but my mother needed a computer, so I gave it to her. I now have a 166 that I'm don't think I can get it on. I have been to OS9 forever and am already running 9.2.2. These are really just garage computers that I play arround with (can't smoke in the house). It is kind of fun to make something do something it is not supposed to. All the real computers are upstairs (brand new emac and 3 pc's). I got a 10.1 cd off of ebay yesterday and am waiting for it to ship. I am also going to e-mail my xpostfacto log file to Ryan. Maybe it will help someone. Thanks for your help. I'll let you know about my progress. |

Yes, erasing the drive is the same as initializing it. I wish you luck. Remember, if you are a PC user, it's like you're installing Windows XP on a Pentium/200. It may work, but it will be slow. If you want to install the latest (and unsupported in your Mac) version of Mac OS 9, try http://www.os9forever.com |

I will try to, ahem, borrow a copy. I have been trying to for several months, but as I seem to be the only mac user I know it has been unatainable. I purchased the 10.0 off of ebay. I will look for a 10.1. Is erasing the drive the same thing as initializing it. I am also a mac newbie, but a pretty decent pc enthusiast. |

Well, I can't decide exactly how much text, but I remember that some more text appeared after "automatic reboot in progress".I guess you're pretty stuck where you are. Can't you, ahem, borrow a copy of OSX 10.1.x? If not, the only thing that occurs to me is re-initializing the partition you're installing OSX to and trying again. Unfortunately, I have no experience with OSX 10.0. |

I'm curious as to what is happening after I reboot. After I type boot, lots of extensions are found, then lots of things "load anyway" then it says auto reboot in progress, then it says copied so many files in and out etc. then a few other things happen. Some succesful, some not. Then I get the error I listed. From what I have been reading (and that has been alot) I think the installer should have started before then. Do you remember anything about how much text went by before it started? |

Well, you may know that the 6500 is not in the XpostFacto's list, that is, it's really unsupported. However, I did install Max OS X 10.1.5 on my Performa 6360 which is currently using a PowerMac 6500/300 logic board with 128MB of RAM. As of my experience, installing from CD is a no go. I copied the CD to a separate partition of my HD and then installed OSX on the FIRST partition (OSX does not install on other partitions of a ATA drive ,it must be in the first one). After installed, everything worked OK, even onboard ATI chip was recognized. SCSI CD worked, external SCSI ZIP drive worked, PCI ethernet card worked, PCI USB card worked. In my opinion, you should try OSX 10.1.5. p.s.: you say your machine is a 225MHz, I assume this is the original PPC 603ev processor. My macine is a 300MHz, and OSX runs considerably slow on it. Processor upgrades definitely does NOT work at this time. |
