Anybody manage to install AND boot Panther yet? |

As the title implies, I can install Panther, whether it be clean install or upgrade over shaguar, but I simply cannot get the resulting OS to BOOT. I get one of the two following scenarios: 1) Error: unable to read device entry for Device-549000 (This is a successful non-hang beginning, but stalls there) 2) Kernel Panic - We're hanging here! (This one's far more common) Obviously XPF is using a Darwin 6 kernel from its own package to "temporarily" boot off a drive during an install, as I can get Panther's CD to boot fine that way so I can install it. But upon trying to boot the newly created OS on the HD itself, it's a no-go. So, has anybody successfully installed and booted Panther yet on XPF-necessitated Macs? - Chibi Delennâ„¢ |

Krevnik, Well, what you suggest requires a couple things I don't have access to. Namely Panther, so that I can compile using GCC 3.3. Of course, having the source code for the .kexts and knowledge of *how* to compile them in GCC also helps, hehe. But I find it odd that the same .kexts can boot the Panther CD itself, but NOT the OS it installs. That makes no sense whatsoever. There has to be a way to have my cake and eat it too. - Chibi Delennâ„¢ |

Apparently, the changes from 10.2 and 10.3 with gcc 3.3 require a re-compile of the kexts at a minimum. This is probably not even reality, and that there is a little more work required before 10.3 will boot. *shrug* I do know that the Beige and Wallstreet G3 systems will need XPostFacto to run 10.3 now, which means Ryan has even more on his plate. Me, I just got a Lombard, and I am not too worried about the 8600 staying at 10.2.6 for a few months. |
