Monitor switches off during install of 10.2 |

Hi all, Sorry if this topic has been discussed many times already, but the lack of a search function.... I have had 10.2.6 installed succesfully on my machine. Regretfully for some reason the system bombed. When I started up I would no longer get the login screen, but instead a completely blue screen with the spinning beach ball showing. Starting up in verbose and/or single user mode was not able to solve things for me. Anyway, I decided to do a clean 10.2 install thinking that this should be a breeze since I know it should work fine on my machine. What happened is: I got through the first cd of the install just fine, then it asked for the second cd. After inserting that it continued with the install, but after a few minutes the monitor switched off. The computer did not reboot of its own accord... strange no? Anyway, I have 9600, with 832MB RAM, a Sonnet G4/700 and a Radeon 7000 installed. Has anybody encountered this problem as well? Is there a way to get around it? Thanks for any help, Jonck |

Yes, absolutely, this would be a good one for the Bugzilla! |

This problem has been mentioned before. I also had a problem installing OS X with the Radeon 7000 card installed but it was a long time ago and I don't remember what version of OS X I used then. Is this something that one would enter into BugZilla so that it will get added to the XPostFacto doc or Compatibility page? |

Hi Guys, Thanks for your suggestions. Thank god I now have everything working again, though it was a bit of a nightmare seeing how my deadline for my thesis is nearing quickly... I'll just post what I did to make it work in case someone else ever has the same problem (though the lack of searching might make it hard to find this thread). Indeed the first thing I did was to check the reinstall BootX and Extensions and tried to re- boot, no luck. After that I tried booting in single-user mode and ran fsck, which told me my drive was fine :-) I read on macintouch that this problem was probably due to screwed up permissions, so I ran the following line: sudo diskUtil repairPermissions This took a long time, but regrettably did not solve anything. In the end I saw no alternative but to do a clean install. I did manage to save my e- mails, adresses and bookmarks by backing up the folders "Mail" and "Safari" from the ~/Library directory and placing them back after doing the clean install. Maybe this is a bit of a "DUHH" remark for you cracks out there, but I was holding my breath to see if it would work or not. Anyway, I found out what was causing the no-screen error: it turns out that Jag does not have the drivers for the ATI Radeon 7000 after all. Luckily I still had the original graphics card lying around so I plugged this in and hooked up my monitor to that. After that the install went flawlessly. Once Jag was installed I updated to 10.2.6, installed the ATI drivers and switched back to my ATI card. Another thing that I read on macintouch (that I cannot corroborate, since I already wiped my disk before finding out about this) is that the problem that you get stuck with a blue screen before the login window can be caused by a corrupt font file in OS 9 (!). The way to test if this is causing it is by booting into 9, dragging the fonts folder out of the system folder and rebooting into X. Those are all my findings of my little adventure, I hope this will help someone prevent undergoing the considerable stress and discomfort that I suffered :-) All the best, Jonck |

I have also done the same as naturist suggests, I have only done that to get my cloned drive (via ccCloner) to boot X after I run a backup, OR if it doesn't boot at all, which happened a lot in the early days my tinkering, but thankfully seems to have settled down these days after I found the "Sweet Spot" on the throttle of XPF (for me it turns out to be 10, though EVER machine is different).... |

I don't have a 9600, and not sure about the problem you are now confronting, but after you do get it back and running again, I'd suggest, should the original problem resurface at some point, instead of reinstalling OS X, reboot into OS 9, then relaunch XpostFacto, CHECK THE REINSTALL BOOT X AND EXTENSIONS checkboxes, and re-boot into OS X. I agree with jseibyl, I think your boot extensions were getting mangled. Mine do from time to time, and it is always fixed with the XpostFacto reinstall ploy. |

Yikes! Sounds like your machine is well rigged for this..... I have to start with the simple questions first, no offence intended..... Is the Radeon secured in the PCI and the monitor tight in the connector. If the answers are yes, then you might need to zap the PRAM. If the machine was running jag okay before, it sounds like the early boot extensions are getting a tad mucked up.......so a reformat might be the ticket IF the above doesn't work. Assuming the clean instal you did, just overwrote..... |
