L2cache settings |

I've managed to get my PTPro running 10.2. SCSI's on slower bus...g4 700...ati 7000...acard 66 w/80 gb WD...enet works. I just ran L2CacheConfig, accepted the imported settings, and a "1" on clock ration, which I assume is full speed. I restarted, and when I woke the machine, it had the desktop, but went directly into an interminable beachball. Could it be the L2Cache settings? Any advice from others w/similar setups? |

After removing a usb/firewire board i still got freezes when running SETI for five to ten minutes. I replaced the Sonnet X-tune up with the Powerlogic CPU director and untill now after several hours running SETI among other programs the freezes are gone. 9600/ Sonnet G4 8oo. |

Yes, it most certainly does have an L3 cache. I have exactly that card and I used Sonnet X-Tuneup to get the caches to be recognized. Both caches are now recognized by System Profiler and the card is running OS X 10.2.6 at a very nice speed indeed. I have also had very poor experiences with Sonnet's customer service. When I switched from a G3/400 to the G4/700 my computer would no longer boot OS X. The people at Sonnet did not have a clue what might be causing this rather grave error. They told me I should not try to run OS X on an unsupported machine and for them the case was closed with that :-) They even sent me an email asking me to rate their "service", ROTFL!!! All the best, Jonck |

it does have L3 cache, i found that most sonnet costomer support people are dopes. The guy i e-mailed did not know what zapping the pram was. the only ones who know what they are talking about are the ones that go to macworlds and other expos. http://www.sonnettech.com/product/crescendo_pci.html#tech%20specs |

Is there L3 cache on the G4700? I called Sonnet tech yesterday and they said no. But the tech was a real bozo and had to keep putting me on hold to get answers! So, folks is there L3 cache or not? |

installing Powerlogix CPU director is much quicker than Sonnets and can be used as a steping block to sonnets software. we determined a long time ago that the Cache enabling software is responcibale for the random crashes and some enablers work on some cards but ot on others, so if you go download Powerlogix CPU director (you may have to do that in 9) then open the app and quickly change the speed of the Cache or turn it off then on again (just something to have powerlogix take control over the cache, turning it off then on is best) powerlogix software will start late in the boot cycle but enables on the fly, so you can use sonnets software after you get Powerlogix software working to enable the cache durring the boot process then overclock the cache with powerlogix later in the boot process. thats what i do now with my G4 400 and it works fine. Good Luck |

Sounds like a bad card... If you have another mac you could test it there, or just return it for an exchange/refund... Marty PS I had sonnet G4/800 that didn't work right, I got my $ back. |

BTW, slowing the clock speed in L2Cache did get rid of the beachball from hell. But I'm now in X-Tuneup hell! |

X-Tuneup issues... |

OK...Got X-Tuneup...instructions are a bit confusing...looks like my machine just needs a straight install and then a restart...so I install and restart...but lots of freezes...(btw, before the restart, I removed the L2Cache folder and file from 'library/ startupitems' think it might cause a conflict / duplication w/X-Tuneup)...sometimes i get frozen at blue screen...sometimes get all the way to the desktop...but before I can complete install of X-Tuneup (which I think from instructions needs to be run and then have OS X restart) I get frozen. I will say that when I get a complete boot, it looks like it is going much faster than it had been. Maybe I need to throttle back to avoid freezes? But how can I modify anything? I'm not even sure X-Tuneup is fully installed yet! BTW, I removed ACARD PCI -> IDE card just to make sure it was not an issue. Any ideas? |

I have bee using Sonnet X-Tuneup, works well and helped significantly, I want to try the Powerlogix software, but since the machine is stable, no need. I had the same proc, the L3 cache is the most important memory on this chip and if it is not enabled, it WILL be slow. |

Don't use L2CacheConfig. while it can control your G4 700's L2 cache it does not enable the L3 Cache, which will boost the speed of your machine when it is active. Use Sonnet's X-Tuneup 1.2.7 to enable both caches. It loads very early in the boot process and so shortens boot times as well. Your other option is Powerlogix's CPU director. I have downloaded it but have not yet had time to try it out. |
