Kernel Panic at end of Jaguar Install |

I have been getting a Kernel Panic at the end of the Jaguar install process. After I've entered all of my user information and it says it's "Creating user account" i get the "friendly" panic screen telling me to reboot. After a reboot it just hangs on the grey screen with the apple logo. This occurs with two different Jag. install discs: the 10.2 and 10.2.3 disc both have the same problem. I'm using XPF 2.2.5. I've had jaguar working on this machine before- I reformatted the drive because of a slew of corrupted files. I've been unable to boot into X for over 3 weeks now- I finally gave up trying to fix the install that I had and wiped off the drive. Now, I've got this to deal with. All in all, I've installed os X probably 10+ times on this machine in the last couple of years and I've never had this problem. Until now... Machine data (although it's not the machine, since Jag. has worked on it before) 8500 W/ Sonnet G4/450 OrangeMicro PCI Firewire/USB ATI Rage Orion 128 (removed to install X) 608MB RAM Installing to a newly formatted IBM DCH04SU 4.6 GB SCSI Internal drive. |

it did it agin, but this time I waited out the reboot- it booted into X and gave me the setup screen again. I entered the data the same as I had earlier and this time it said that the user name was invalid- I was using the same user name I use every time I install X and I guess it saw my external firewire drive and the files that belong to the OLD account. changing the first account name got it to install correctly. now to put all my apps, updates, etc back on... plus, i gotta figure out what I was using to control the L2 Cache- it's been so long since I did this I can't remember... arrrgh. |

Sounds like it could be an unreliable disk drive too... Perhaps your former corrupt data and your current bad install are both related to a flakey HD?? Just a thought, Marty |

huh. odd that there would be directory damage to a disk that just got a new directory via the reformat. I'm doubtful that will fix it, but I'll give it a shot. Ryan- I'm pretty sure that I had it set to show panic text- could the fact that it's still running from the install disc prevent the settings from working? regardless, I'll check the settings when I get home... I'm not looking forward to going through the install process AGAIN. I did clean install of os 9 for a friend the other day and it took 15 minutes. I miss those days... one final thing- I did notice that it had the MAC and IP addresses at the bottom of the "friendly" panic window- I don't know if this is normal or not, but it may be an indicator that X is having some trouble with the network communications... don't know why that would cause a panic though... |

I got the same problem last month when I did a fresh Jaguar install. I had wiped the drive beforehand also. What fixed the problem for me was running Disc Warrior on my OSX partition from OS9. It found directory damage and repaired the problem. |

Hmm. That is a very odd time for a kernel panic to occur. To diagnose it, the best bet is for you to check the "Show panic text" option in the debug menu of XPostFacto. Then, you will get actual panic text, instead of the friendly screen. You can copy that down (or take a picture, if you have a digital camera), and that may tell us something about what's going wrong. |
