Can't get L3 Cache enabled |

I'm trying to get the L3Cache enabled on my Sonnet G4 700 in a PTPro. The machine seems to be running 10.2.6 OK with just the L2 cache enabled (it's always on) but I know the L3 will speed things up. Other details: 2 18GB Seagates and a CD-ROM (all on the slow scsi bus for now...trying to take one step at a time!); ATI Radeon 7000; 280 RAM. I have tried both CPU Director and X-Tune-Up. L2CacheConfig won't enable L3. With CPU Director -- using settings from forum member 'kilajamo' -- I get most of the way through the boot, but crash with a text message "over" the start up screen saying I need to restart my computer. With X-Tune-Up, I only get to the solid blue screen (before the desktop pattern and the start up screen) and I crash. Thoughts? |

I've never had a problem with my Sonnet G4 800/PTP setup. Prior to installing the Sonnet, I had an XLR8 SSe G4 card that gave me nothing but problems. Flaky, unstable performance, freezes, lockups etc. Since swapping that card for a Sonnet, my PTP has been rock solid. No freezes or lockups ever. Sorry to hear about the problems others have with these cards. Based on my experience, I would give the Sonnet card extremely high marks. |

Sonnet didn't design these cards very well at all, or did, and just didn't do any *testing* with them at all. I had three G4/800 cards from Sonnet in my 8500 here, and on the first, the thing worked great for two days, then slowly all 3D became gibberish, and after a week, 3D apps/games were unusable (and UT based games crashed on launch/intro-flyby, yet were fine with my G3/400 put back in). Add to that the fact that my Radeon (R7200) card got REALLY hot compared to when it was used with the G3/400, and that was a good indication that these cards had voltage regulation problems that affected the entire PCI bus. The second of these cards wouldn't boot past the happy mac screen AT ALL, even when all but one 32 MB DIMM was taken out. Hurrah. Third card wouldn't even give me the boot chime. Nothing. Zilch. Nada. I now avoid Sonnet CPUs like the plague. Sonnet's X-Tune Up installs SonnetCache.kext. That is the ONLY FILE YOU NEED TO ENABLE ALL CACHES. Trash anything else you get. This also has the benefit of enabling caches *very* early in the boot process, thereby making boot times much faster. Hopefully Ryan's solution(s) will do this soon as well, and if I'm really lucky, can see both CPUs of my soon to be installed mach velocity card running a 2nd G4/400. I wish you luck with your setup though...assuming it will ever work right. - Chibi Delennâ„¢ |

Well, you guys were right...flaky card. Confirmed w/Sonnet tech that cache on card is problematic. But have been running imtermittently, cause I have seen everything come up in metronome. But after total clean install of 9, sonnet extension consistently crashed. So Sonnet tech had me start with just the Sonnet ext. & something called "Text Encoding Converter." Freeze. So hopefully a working card will be easier to enable! |

After installing Sonnet X-Tune Up you need to set XPostFacto to reinstall extensions. Have you used the most recent version X-Tune Up? |

no. card is good. metronome confirms everything on 9.2. i think i'll wipe the drives clean and do new installs. 9.2 was crashing all over the place yesterday. quicker to reload everything than chase after everything with conflict catcher! |

It is starting to look like you may have a defective card. Does the L3 enable in OS9 using the Sonnet extension? If so then the problem is software in OSX. |
