Really frustrated! |

The basics: PTPro/G4700/2 Seagate 18GB/280MB RAM/ATI 7000. I've had 9.2.2 & OS 10.2.6 running on one of the drives. But I have never been able to enable the L3 cache in OS 10. So I decided to start over. LLformated & zeroed the drive; 3 GB & 15 GB partitions. Loaded 9 on the 3 GB; upgraded to 9.1; upgraded to 9.2 (at this point, got a crash trying to load ATI Graphics Accelerator); upgraded to 9.2.2 (still crashed at ATI Graphics Accelerator). Once I got 9.2.2 installed, I thought everything would be OK as long as I bagged the ATI GA extension. But NOOOOOOO!. Even with just the base OS 9.2 (without the ATI GA extension) and the Sonnet extension, I get crashes. Usually at Conflict Catcher (8.0.9 I think), but at toher places at other times. I want to get 9.2.2 running stable before I reinstall 10. Any thoughts on why I'm having issues? |

--You are not giving anything up by not being able to run 9.2. It's main deal is compatibility with X when you run Classic applications.-- I went from 9.1, which crashed me nearly four times a day while doing simple things such as reading email and surfing the web, to 9.2.1 (then later 9.2.2), and lo and behold, all was stable, and snappier. While it seems to be a matter of the machine's Karma rating or something, most readers I've seen that updated to 9.2.x noted increased speed, and general stability enhancements. Sure Apple notes "it's for Classic". They don't want others dropping 9.2.x into their PCI macs for the same reason they don't want OS X on those macs - they just didn't want to support it. The only time 9.2.x seems to be a problem is when people try to install it from oh, say, a G4 Install CD. THAT I guarantee will cause you no end to headaches. Sidenote: For those that love living on the edge, with perhaps the exception of the ATI extensions, do NOT bring in updated extensions that might reside in the Computer_SW.img section of most newer Install CDs that come with recent macs. Those *will* disable working features you enjoy now. This is especially true with USB and FireWire extensions. - Chibi Delennâ„¢ |

Well, turns out my SonnetG4 700 _is_ a "flaky piece of shit." Tech support at Sonnet confirmed that today. Running fresh install of 9.1, they asked me to boot with just the Sonnet extension and "Text Encoding Converter" extension. Froze. So it will be on it's way back for replacement. On my nickle, of course! I'll check back in when I get the replacement. Hopefully, I'll be able to enable L3 cache on it. |

Brinster, You are not giving anything up by not being able to run 9.2. It's main deal is compatibility with X when you run Classic applications. I have 3 partitions for os's. One big one for X. A smaller one for 9.1 when I need to boot into 9.1 and a little one (couple of gigs at most) for a stripped down 9.2 for running Classic apps. Anything to do with modems, ethernet, file sharing, etc. can be taken out of the 9.2 system. My entire system folder for 9.2 is half a gig and the only thing that changes is the preferences. It loads quickly in Classic and never crashes. No extension conflicts because there are hardly any there. No Radeon, no modem, no firewire, no usb, none of that. Then have the 9.1 partition (or drive) for when you boot into 9. You probably could find a combination where they all coexist but why try. |

Thanks for the advice. I hate to think the card is bad, and I have no evidence it is. Everthing I'm experiencing seems like system/extension conflicts. It is a new experience when the base level extensions are not a safe assumption! But 9.2.2 was never supposed to run on my box, especially with a G4 card. So if I forget 9.2.2 and just stick with 9.1, am I giving up anything? I mean the goal is to get to a stable, fast OS X. Once there, I guess I can live with running 9.1 in classic, right? |

Are you using OS 9 helper to get 9.2.2 installed? I used it to install 9.2.2 on my 9600 and it works really well. |

I have a PM 9600 with Sonnet G3/400 and Radeon 7000 64MB. I can't run OS 9.2.x with stability in the 9600. To install the Radeon drivers, I just the latest OpenGL version with TomeViewer from OS 9.2.2 installer and put into OS 9.1 extensions folder - then ATI installer worked fine (it complained, but installed). I wouldn't try 9.2.x if I were you. 9.1 isn't so different, and you won't get any speed improvement, really. My 2¢. |

I haven't been able to get 9.2.2 stable on my 9600. I also have a radeon 7000 but the drivers won't install in 9.1 so after installin them in 9.2.2 I removed them manualy, placed them in 9.1 and dumped 9.2. The sonnet drivers for my g4/8oo also resulted in crashes in 9.1 but when replaced by CPU Director everything worked fine. Did you tryed the G3/G4 cache enabler from Powerlogix? I know, its a diffrent machine and a different cpu board but unless it's "a flaky piece of shit" quoting mjoecups358, it should work. |

The sonnet card is flaky piece of shite? Just a guess. I bought one and had to return it, because was unusuable in 3 different known good systems... Yikes. Marty |
