I'm using a PM 8500 with the onboard video. I added more VRAM, but can't get OS X to display larger than 640x480. Can anyone help? Al |

Switchres worked, for some reason the machine is detecting my monitor as a 13" display... But, it's ok now. |

did you use the update from Software Update or did you go to Apple download site and get the Combo upgrade? |

I'll try Switchres, but right now no Ethernet access on that system. MacOS 10.2.8 won't access the internet. Even with the latest version downloaded and installed. Going to MacOS 9 and changing the resolution didn't help. |

Which version of X are you running? Because I had a problem with changing resolutions with the original OSX and what I discribed above is what worked. After that the Displays preference panel worked. Now running 10.2.6 with no problems. |

When you open the "Displays" preference panel what is the title of the displays window? Although it is not immediately obvious, this is one of the few clues as to what display OS X thinks you have connected. Secondly, make sure the "Show Modes Recommended by Display" checkbox is UNchecked. If this doesn't make any difference then download the shareware app SwitchRes from www.versiontracker.com - this should allow you to select any of your built-in graphics resolutions regardless of what type of monitor OS X thinks is connected. With an AppleVision 17 you should be able to select 1024x768 @ 75Hz in thousands of colours even with only 2MB of VRAM. |

Where did the punctuation go? It would make more sense if I put it in. Sorry, I'll try again. This worked for me...boot back to 9.x and go to your monitor controls and set the monitor to thousands of colors and a resolution of 832 X 624 or something near that, what ever is listed for your monitor. Close the monitor control panel and reboot into X using XPF. You could have some bad vram or you may have the number of colors too high or both. I have found that my 8500 performs no better with 4 meg vram than with 2meg. I have found that thousands of colors works best. Also how big is your monitor etc. More information would help.
