S X installed on Beige G3 Desktop Won't "see" USB |

I have a Beige G3 with a ZIF G4 processor upgrade. I have a third party USB card to which I have numerous piecies of equipment attached. I have installed OS X twice and totally removed it twice because I cannot get any of the OS X versions to access the USB devices I have installed. I just discovered this forum today and have looked through several of the different forums looking for someone who has had this problem. Since there doesn't appear to be anyone with this problem I am placing this question. Does anyone know how th resolve this issue? |

Well it can't find anyting to help you here. It should work, but it does not. I'd try it in X with NOTHING on it but a mouse or kbd and see if they would work other than that I'd plunk down $20 for a SIGG or Belkin USB 1.1 card or a few more for the Sonnettech USB 2.0 card that will work in 9 at 1.1 . Not much point in chasing your tail over a $20 part at Wal-Mart. Any pc USB card will do. |

I just thought of something. When I first installed the card, a couple years ago, even with all the Apple USB support extensions, I could not get the machine to recognize the USB card until I went looking and found a MacAlly control panel which when installed brought the card right up. Could this problem with OS 10 be related to that? Incidentally, I am currently running 9.2 because it absolutely essential that I have a working computer if I am to do my daytime job. I just want you to know I really appreciate your help. |

Don't see any reason an OPti 82C861 chip won't work in OS X in your Beige G3. IF you have OS X still installed GOTO /Applications/Utilities/Terminal OPEN Terminal and type "ioreg" without the "" then command(APPLE KEY)+A to select-all then Command+C to copy then post all that info back. If you don't have X installed make a report in 9 in the Apple systems profiler and post that back. |

Did a quick google and came up with this: http://www.opti.com/html/usb1394.html I've found that the built in drivers from Apple work fine, but this site has links to other drivers that may help you. Good luck. |

One more time into the breach. I pulled the card out and looked for names on the chip(s). On the front of the card in the upper left of the face I found "Part No. BG-3800-00" On the chip the following was written: OPTi Fire Link Does this help? Dave W |

The vendor-id, device-id, subsystem-vendor-id, and subsystem-id would be very useful in identifying the card. The id's can be used to find the driver (if it exists) in the OS X extensions folder. To get the id's: In OS 9 you can use the "Display Name Registry" app from the PCI or Cardbus DDK on Apple's developer website. In OS X, you can use IORegistryExplorer from the OS X Developer Tools CD or you can use ioreg in the Terminal. |

Take a look at the largest chip on that USB card, who made it?? Sould be NEC, SIIG, Or something like that....... The large CE on the card is standard ID notification, but not the info you need, you will see that on a lot of cards, not sure what it is for, either ISO 9000, or FCC stuff I think. |

Thank you for responding. I don't remember the brand of the USB card so this afternoon after reading other forum posts about similar issues I pulled the card out and checked to see if there was any writing on the card. The only thing I could find that may give some idea of the maker are two capital letters on the upper right front corner. The letters are "C E". I only have the three slots to place the card in and I saw that other people in the forum felt that placement made a difference for some cards so I move from the slot on the left to the slot on the farthest right. I'm really hesitant to try loading 10 on again until I am sure that there is a reasonable chance for success. Reformatting the harddrive is a real pain and very time consuming. The card works fine in system 9.2 which is what I have been running with for the past year or so. I have an Apple optical mouse, scanner and printer (not apple brand) whick function great under OS 9.2. I recently purchased OS 10.2 and tried getting it to see the USB card and had the same result. I use OS 10.2.6 at work and really enjoy it ( just wish I could speed it up a little). I hate to think I wasted the money on 10.2 for my home computer. |

Try a different USB card. I like the NEC based USB2 card I payed $15.00 for it and it works perfectly in OSX (NOT IN os 9 though). Marty |

What make and model of USB card are you using. I'm assuming it works in OS9. Also, what version of OS X are you installing. 10.0 and to some extent 10.1 had problems with USB adapters. You're better off installing 10.2 if you have it. Don't pay any attention to Apple System Profiler in OSX regarding USB - it will swear blind that there are no USB devices connected even when they are working. |
