Things not looking good.... |

I was recently very frustrated when attempting to install os x onto my powermac 8500. The system was running 9.2 when I loaded the x cd and opened xpf 2.2.5. I chose the hard drive in xpf and clicked the restart button. Upon restarting, there is no video sent to the monitor. It also sounds like the system is not booting properly. I have attempted restarts with the os 9 install cd (holding down c), as well as a restart with extensions off to no avail. Is my computer helplessly lost?? How can I recover the startup and get back what I so easily lost with the click of a button????? |

You don't mention whether you are using the video on the motherboard or on a card in one of the PCI slots. If the latter, be aware that OS X requires use of the onboard video the first time you run it, or you will get only the blue screen of death. Also, you do not mention what processor is in your 'puter or which version of OS X you tried to install. If you still have the original 604 or 604e processor, you can only install OS X 10.1.5 or below; 10.2.x require a G3 or G4 upgrade. Further, I noticed when I installed 10.1.0 on my machine with a G3 processor, that the install blew up sorta like yours until I replaced the G3 with a 604, whereupon it booted fine. At that point, I put the G3 back in, and it booted fine ever after. I did not notice any such problem when I installed 10.2. |

Actually, before zapping the parameter RAM, try the other troubleshooting steps in the documentation (particularly, holding down the option key at boot time). Of course, zapping the paramter RAM is a good idea if holding down the option key doesn't work. |
