M Audio Revolution problem |

Due to the lack of sound in with 10 I purchased an M Audio Revolution. I know that some of you have this card and am asking for a little input. After installation, the instructions say to go to the sound preferences and choose M Audio for output. This is where the problem is. Just opening the sound panel will lock up the computer and cause a hard reboot. I have sent a request for help to M's support but not heard back. I also am concerned that they will use the "unsupported machine" argument. I started with the install cd which uses 1.2.3. Was able to select the preference panel but any action on it froze the computer. I used their install package 1.2.5. Could not even open the apple sound control panel. It would freeze up again requiring a hard boot and lots of repairs on fsck. I tried 1.2.7 but it crashed my system. Would not reboot. Instructions also say that to update to .5 or above, the "system prefpane cache" has to be deleted (is that a terminal application thing? Terminal scares me because I am such a lisdexic typist). I couldn't find the cache so I used Jag cache cleaner and it "seemed" to work updating the files to .5 from .3. Any input or help would be appreciated. Machine is 9600 powerlogix g4 450 512 megs ram Acard 6280 with lite on cd burner and until yesterday, 80 gig WD drive Atto express pci with one drive 2 drives on internal bus 1 drive and zip on external bus generic usb ATI orion |

Thanks for posting this info, I was debating buying that sound card, but could be more trouble than its worth, I am running the sonnett g4 in my 9500. I just do the recording in 9 and flip to X, just as you are saying. Yeah it can be a pain to flip os's, but it wokrs and does give me more stability for audio.... |

Thanks marcush, I have given up on audio in for X with or without the Revolution pci card. Too many hard crashes and I have just been lucky that the directory damage has been minimal and easily fixed. The crashes also wreck havoc with the headers for non boot volumes so no more playing around. Fortunately the output works fine. I will just do the input of old records to digital in 9 and then work on the files and burn them in X. And of course, listen to them in ITunes. As a last note, just using the built in input in 9 and then switching back to X had problems. It took rebooting with safe mode and then a couple of reboots to get sound back with the audio out. There is definately something going on with the sound control and old world Macs. |

Then I'd try using the Powerlogix CPU director to enable your cache. That might make the difference for you. Not only do they not support CPU upgraded machines but I was told at Macworld that they weren't supporting Old World Macs with OSX. |

This is the response from MAudio. "It sounds like you are using an Accelerator card like a G4 card on a 9600? Unfortunately there are occasional incompatibilities with those Accelerator cards and audio devices. One thing that might help is if you update your OS X to the 10.2.6 'Combo' update as this resolves many issues with the way OS X detects and handles PCI devices as well as Core Audio, but again, if you are using an Accelerator card you may still have conflicts." Since you used the Sonnett Card I am wondering if that is the cause of my problems. Mine is a Powerlogix and I am using Ryan's cache enabler. I wonder if the cache enabler is the cause?? By the way, I had another partition with a cloned startup disc and upgraded it to 10.2.6 and then applied the 1.2.5 driver. It actually froze worse than my first attempt at installing the drivers. A call to M Audio this morning told me that they don't support any Macs with accelerator cards and advised me to return the card. |

The first time I downloaded the driver from their website. I think it was 1.2.5. |

Thanks I have repaired permissions after each install of the driver/control panel package (3 installs, 3 repair permisions). I don't think that is the problem. What version did you use for installation? I have since deleted all M Audio files from my boot drive. |

Try running repair permissions from disk utility. This problem has the ring of being a permissions problem. I've had a Revolution card in my machine since about April and have had no problems with it. I repair permissions after every install that requires it to go onto my OSX boot drive just to be on the safe side. My machine is a Power Tower Pro G4/800, 1GB RAM, Sonnet Tempo ATA/100, Ratoc Firewire/USB2.0, Zynx 10/100 Ethernet, Radeon Mac Edition 32MB, 3dfx Voodoo 3. |
