I tried the new beta 3 and thought things were going great until I tried to login on start up and it would not accept my login password it kept shaking no at me. Talk about wanting to strangle a computer. I am running a 9600 with a G4 800 mhz upgrade from Sonnet, 640 mb of ram , system OS 9.2.2. Do you have any suggestions for this problem? Maybe I should go back to 2.2.5. I checked it with Diskwarrior and even with it''s repairs it would not work. I will try Norton and see if that helps. |

Part of the problem is that I haven't been testing XPF 3 with 10.0 and 10.1 yet -- I need to do that before I go beta with it. It's possible that the XPFStartupItem is causing some trouble in 10.0 and 10.1 -- another thread reports this. |

"Is there a simpler, faster and with less grief way to install OS X on a 9600? " I would really start with a full install disk of Jag, but that is in a perfect world. |

" Yes I have OS 10.2 but it checks for previous versions of the software and won't install unless it finds it. " This is an upgrade disk not a full install disk, I was asking about a full install disk. |

"I can't zero it out because Apples disk utility does not recognize the drive unless you use OS 10 and I can't load it. So I zapped the pram with tech tools. " Are you saying that drive cannot be formatted in OS 9, but CAN in OS X?????? |

I have backed up my OS 9 and erased my IBM drive, both partitions, I can't zero it out because Apples disk utility does not recognize the drive unless you use OS 10 and I can't load it. So I zapped the pram with tech tools. What do I do now? |

I checked the open firmware suggestion and that is for system OS 10.1 or 10.2. I am loading 10.0 and I have not upgraded any firmware on this machine. Is there a simpler, faster and with less grief way to install OS X on a 9600? (Rant) So far this has been a pain in the (another rant). I spend more time installing and getting no where. |

I have OS 9.22 on the bottom partition and I am installing OS X on the top. I did not low level format because I did not want to erase OS 9.22. The reason I am reinstalling in the first place is OS 10.2 lost (keys) and would not boot. Yes I have OS 10.2 but it checks for previous versions of the software and won't install unless it finds it. I also found updates of my sonnet software of which I upgraded. I also have checked OS X with Norton 6.03 and Disk warrior and have found many errors and this is on a clean install. |

okay, then start from scratch, you said you had X running, correct?? There are ways allegedly to move around the password, but at this point you gotta start fresh, do you have an install disk of 10.2 to start with??? 10.2 is easier to finesse on install, in my experience. Make sure you low level format your target drive in os 9 drive setup to make sure you have a freesh disk, if you just erase it, the data is still there..... |

I erased the hard drive. If it doesn't load or you can't get passed the password what other choices do you have? |

Resetting the original Admin account password Follow these steps to reset a password when there is only one Admin account on the computer, or if the original Admin account (of several) needs a password reset. "Original" Admin account refers to the one that was created immediately after installing Mac OS X. So long as the original Admin password is known, the original Admin user may reset the passwords of other Admin accounts using the steps described above. 1. Start up from the Mac OS X Install CD. You should first disable Open Firmware password protection, if it is enabled. Refer to technical document 106482, "Mac OS X 10.1, 10.2: How to Set up Open Firmware Password Protection" for more information. 2. Select Reset Password from the Installer menu. 3. Select your Mac OS X hard disk volume. 4. Set the selected user to the name of your original Admin account. Note: Be sure to select your Admin account name. Do not select "System Administrator". System Administrator is actually a reference to the root user. Do not confuse it with a normal Admin account. 5. Enter a new password. 6. Click Save. "I did reset the login name and I was able to upgrade to os 10.04 but then it would not install 10.1 upgrade. So I erased it and tried to start over again now nothing is loading. Any suggestions? I tried to take out preference files and anything I thought would stop it from installing I have also been checking the hard drive and have found corrupted files that were fixed by Apple's OS 9 disk utility." What EXACTLY did you erase????? |

I went back to 2.2.5 and got the original problem of still looking for boot device. I did reset the login name and I was able to upgrade to os 10.04 but then it would not install 10.1 upgrade. So I erased it and tried to start over again now nothing is loading. Any suggestions? I tried to take out preference files and anything I thought would stop it from installing I have also been checking the hard drive and have found corrupted files that were fixed by Apple's OS 9 disk utility. |

I have had identical problems logging in to x with my 8500 running 9.2.2. To this point I have had no success in getting past the login screen despite resetting the username/password during the os x install. Just like you mentioned, no matter what password I enter the login keeps shaking it's head. I will also tell you that I have had the same issue with 2.2.5. There are ways to bypass the login screen using "single user mode," but I am not well versed in doing this and have not succeeded. If you find a solution let me know. Good luck. |

did you try to reinstall boot extensions?? Also does it still boot okay with XPF 2.2.5?? If so, just stay with that..... |
