G3 processor upgrade |

I am having trouble with a new G3/300mhz processor upgrade. I am installing the processor onto a powermac 8500 with 604e processor currently installed. The problem is immediate, in that the system fails to boot properly. I get the apple tone sometimes followed by 2 reboot attempts, but never any video. The processor is a crescendo card. I have installed the software with the 604e running, and installation is successful. I am certain that the card itself is properly (tightly) inserted. Any suggestions. I bought the card used but it was working perfectly in a 7500 previously. Thus I have no "official" tech support from the manufacturer. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks. |

Are your HD connections all in and tight?? Sounds like it is looking for a hard drive with an OS and NOT finding one. BTW, DID you REMOVE the L2 cache chip on the mobo?????? The g3 has its own cache, AND WILL BOMB if the L2 is on the board. It is between the RAM slots on an 8500, and looks different than the RAM. |

I tried again to insert the g3 processor after pressing the CUDA button and was able to get video following command+option+p+r. However, all that I get is a blinking floppy disc image with a question mark. Tried to insert the crescendo software floppy at this point and the computer just gave the floppy back to me. The image on the screen then changed to a blinking floppy with an X. Next I inserted my os 9 cd and restarted holding down "c" The result was a happy mac smiling face with the usual grey background, but no further progress. The cd background never loaded. I repeated this method with the same result. I am in need of further assistance. |

Had the same trouble when I first got my first 8500, Held CUDA down for 30 sec, still nothing UNTILL, I yanked th pram battery for a day, THEN hit the CUDA for 30 sec, put the battery back in, fired it right up. Ram is also a good suggestion, try de-interleaving it if it is mishmoshed, just to get it to boot, then re-interleave if it is okay. You could have one bad stick of ram, had another machine where one 8 meg stick didn't play nice and bombed the whole machine, fixed that ram stick with a hammer.....permenently. :-) |

So let me get this straight. Pull out the 604e processor. Push the CUDA button with a pin and hold 5 seconds, Then insert new processor. Close up system and boot. Just want to get my pushing and pulling in the correct order. |

You really shouldn't push the cuda 2-3 times in a row. Push and hold once for 5 seconds or so will be plenty. |

Sorry, missread the CUDA part. Pull the CPU look for a black button in the back of the case, left if you are looking down at the cpu slot. Silver around black. push with a pin for 5 sec, 2-3 times. Then try all the things I posted before. MY BAD:-0 |

TRY COMMAND(apple key)+option+p+r at boot hold for three boot chimes. If you get video but still have trouble post back. If no video try to clean the Gold leads of the sonnet card with the eraser from a pincel. Still no go remove all but 1 ram dimm(stick) still a no go, the cpu may be bad, try it in another mac if you know some one who has one.If you get the same thing it's fubar, if it works then it's something with your mac that can be fixed. Years ago when money was short I would buy motors for cars from the junk yards, they'd say"oh, this one is good, just pulled it from a wreck and it ran fine." After replacing a motor 2-3 times you learn to see it run before you buy it. I.E. You saw the CPU running "fine" in another mac before you got it, or the person who you got it from "told" you it was a "good one". |

I am not aware of the CUDA button that you are referring to, so no, I did not press it. I am actually quite an amateur when it comes to processors. The Crescendo support claims that installation is a simple exchange, but I am in need of some details, if anyone has any. I have one PCI card that is a NEC FW/USB card that is working fine with the 604e processor in 9.2.2. Looking at the sonnet website says that the processor functions from os 7 to 9.1, and also with os x. Is it possible that 9.2.2 is the problem. Can you clarify your response? perhaps step by step? Sorry for any inconvenience. Thanks again. |

Just to confirm, you pressed the CUDA button when changing out the processor. Next step would be to confirm that all your memory is 60ns and is all EDO or FPM and if interleaved is matched by manufacturer. The next question would be what PCI cards do you have installed. |
