Ryan, HowTO utilize XPF for OS-X and PPC Linux? |

I know that XPF is for "supporting OS-X on un-supported Macs", but I like to tinker around with PPC Linux from time to time. I won't go into a lengthy diatribe of the pros and cons of MacOS, OSX and Linux, but since seeing 3.0 Beta (kudos on not having to have regular MacOS extensions on this version), I've started to wonder if it's possible to extend the "choices" of XPF. I know I may be barking up the wrong tree, but I know that I can't be the only one in existence that has wondered about a "project" such as this, what are your thoughts? |

Yellow Dog ran very well on the 5500/275 I had, so, it should be fine on the 6500/300... |

Yes, actually I have thought about that from time to time. Quite a bit of what XPostFacto does would also be useful for booting Linux or NetBSD. In particular, figuring out the Open Firmware names for devices, writing NVRAM, etc. So I do have at the back of my mind that XPF could be usefully adapted to work with Linux or NetBSD, and would like to spend some time on that eventually. |

voxx I'm really curious about installing Yellow Dog Linux on an external test HD on my Performa (6500/300) just to see how fast (or slow) it will be... I'm just afraid that, if it was already difficult to find software/drivers for OS X, imagine for Linux PPC... it would be only worthy if it works really faster than OS 9. <> On my 9500 (g3/500, 512RAM 50pin 10K 9GB Cheetah off of Adaptec 2930U) YDL 2.3 screams (more details below). Opposed to OS-X on the same machine with a 10K 18GB-LVD Cheetah connected to ATTO UL2D it feels aoubt 3 times faster (the UL2D has no Linux driver, and is utilized by a generic SCSI-2 controller). Opposed to Mac OS 9 (depending on whether or not you've compiled your own kernel), they feel about the same with a the "base install". However, on the one kernel I have compiled/built just for running GIMP and Blender, every plug-in/filter/render is about twice as fast as doing it via P.Shop or Strata 3D (the LE-P.Shop and Free v3.0.2 of Strata3D) via OS 9.1. The nice thing about about PPC Linux, is that you CAN do that, ie- get rid of junk that will allow you to conserve disk-space for creating a RAID_0 swap partition(s). You can do it (ie-customize) with Darwin as well, but I'm waiting until I can afford 2x new (well, one used more than likely) macs. One for "pure, bread-n-butter OS-X based app's" and one for a 5x-boot "tinker box"; MacOS 8.5-to-boot->BeOS, LinuxPPC, Classic/OS 9.2, OS X and a pure Darwin install. On this Mac I'd probably try to teach myself how to write cool applications for all the above, (similar to Ryan's approach to XPF, L2CC etc...), for Old World Mac's and getting BeOS to maybe work on New World's. Then maybe try to port BeOS MAX to the PPC platform. I am just hoping that I could eventually get a knack for writing some more "support-for-unsupported Mac" app's for those of us that can't shell out $1000-3000.00 every 1-3 years. |

Go to: http://lppcfom.sourceforge.net/fom-serve/cache/214.html for further info on your 6500 and LinuxPPC... There is a bootloader similar to XPF included in LinuxPPC ( I have to use the MkLinux bootloader on my 8100 as it's a nubus /G3 mod,but it's supposedly easier on a PCI mac)... Speed on my 8100 slower than OS9..but on a PCI mac, again, that might or might not be true,,, Good luck.... |
