Drive Setup newer than version 2.1 |

Using OS 9 Helper and a tip from another post (see my 'Hard Drive Problem') I was able to get access to 'Drive Setup 2.07'. This version solved a number of problems that the OS 9.1 version did not. After tinkering a bit, I found an even newer version on my ibook 2002 model's custom OS 9.2 installation, 'Drive Setup version 2.1'. This version recognized drives that even 2.07 would not. I'm curious to know if anyone has any version for OS 9 that is newer than 2.1??? Maybe with some 2003 model machines that still have classic? |

Panther... 10.3 Disk Utility has improved Partitoning. It also 'seems' like, according to one report on MacIntouch Panther Report, that the number and location of partitions created by Panther has changed. So if you dump the drive partition list, you should see free space at the beginning and end. In the past, OS X would sometimes take part of the partition used for OS X and create a small driver partition, shrinking the partition, during the "preparing drive for installation." Don't know if it does anything similiar if you just install. It does sound like though that Panther does some "updating" to the drive to accept Panther and modify the partition map in some way. And maybe the free space is so that later, if needed, Apple can claim and use some of that for its own use. Not sure why. |

I have an IBM drive that I needed to do a low level format. But, drive set up would not recognize it. So I decided to go backwards to Drive Set up 1.5 downloadable from the Apple's website. DS not only did the low level format but it is now a bootable start up drive. I have FWB but OS X does not like FWB so I did not want to use that on the drive. If you need to do a low level format you can use this and up date the drivers later. When you get OS X loaded. One more thing I have drive setup 2.03,2.05 and 2.07 but Apple is not making this available for download. I am trying to get OS 9 and X loaded on my machine so far so good. |

I'll have to look for this resedit hack you mention. Perhaps someone can make a Drive Setup Helper in much the same vein as OS 9 Helper. Looks like I'll have to register for that forum as well. |

I haven't had a lot of time to experiment with this. However, one of my drives that I'm trying to 'repair' isn't even recognized at all in 2.07, but it is in 2.1. Now the odd thing is that it's an apple branded quantum 3 gig. It has major problems. However, just the fact that DS 2.1 can see it impressed me. |

Glad the res edit hack worked for you. It did on one of my hd's but not the other. This 2.1 disk utility is interesting. I know that the version of disk utility that came with 9.2 worked better than the one that came with 9.1 |

I was able to successfully hack a copy of DS2.07 to recognize & format a drive with an IBM mechanism but a ZJCS vendor name using ResEdit. In ResEdit I opened DS and located/opened the resource fSCR. Then I simply "got info" on a generic IBM drive description (i.e. IBM*) and changed the vendor name & model to agree with my drive's. Worked like a charm. Kept the hacked version for future formatting on the drive. By the way .... thanks to cjsconfections for the suggestion. And thanks to Ed Gonzales for explaining the HFS+ wrapper problem when formatting in OSX to me. I now have a completely solid OSX emergency-boot/maintenance system on an unsupported drive!!! This forum can be killer-awesome if you can navigate it. A lot of very smart people hang out here. Also, I just realized that the most valuable piece of software on my mac is XPF. I rarely have to use it but without it I would be very bored and way behind the times. My entire business depends on OSX's stability now using Old World equipment. The fact that it is free just blows me away. Ryan ..... thanks so much. I owe you one. |

Michael, Thanks for the info! Later today I intend to do a file comparison on the iBook's OS 9 system compared to 9.2.2 update and see which files are newer and how stable they are on oldworld machines. I know it's straying away from XPostFacto, but might be helpful for OS 9 Helper. |

So, just for the record: Apple still sells G4 MDDs. All currently sold models DO boot OS 9, and have it on hd & dvd. My neighbor just got his dual 1.25: it came with Drive Setup 2.1. Mike |

chibi, Good point. However, the 2003 ibooks still boot classic. Also there are reports of Hardware Test CD's for non-os-9-bootable machines that do in fact boot OS 9 to run diagnostics. Just trying to see what the latest versions are. It academic at this point. :) |

Drive Setup is a Mac OS 9 specific disk formatting app. I doubt a newer one would come with 2003 macs that can't boot OS 9, as you can't format in classic. You'd be stuck using Disk Utility on those macs, so they theoretically would not come with a newer DS. - Chibi Delennâ„¢ |

Never heard or seen it. I use Disk Utility 10.2.3+ which supports any drive and lets you Zero-All if needed. But no DS 2.1. |
