Install from clone of a "newworld" system? |

Hi! Sorry if this is covered elsewhere, I couldn't find anything. Is it possible to install OSX from a clone (CarbonCopy Cloner) of a system installed on an Apple supported OSX machine? What I'm thinking is something like clone from my G4 onto the system drive of my 8600 (G4 upgrade) and then use XPF to "reinstall" extentions and BootX. Or maybe something like that. Thanks, T. |

If you use CCC's File feature, Bless OldWorld Target Disk, you should be set. However, Panther may be another story... |

I actually installed 10.2 this way on my upgraded 7600. This works because I believe the install is equivalent for all models (with the recent exception for G5s I think). This and the ability of Xpostfacto to reinstall extensions leaves a functional system. I did this because 1) I had access to a New World machine and 2) I wanted to avoid ripping out the upgrade PCI cards, and trimming to one piece of RAM, AND when I had finally gotten 10.1.5 installed, it was only after many weeks of work. I believe the problems have had to do with the old CD-ROM (Mashita) perhaps. I tried installing 10.2 from an internal HD partition, but that failed (I think that I probably needed to trim the system to the minimum first). At any rate, this is what I remember working. I installed a fresh 10.2 system onto a partition on a New World Machine. I used CCC to move it to a disc image. I moved the disk image to my Old World Machine (actually on a Jazz disk, which I do not recommend if you have anything else, but the system is bigger than a CD), and again used CCC (the 1.3.1 version, because I was in 10.1.5 at the time) to move 10.2 to a HD partition. As I remember, I used Xpostfacto to boot it up from OS9 with the reinstall extensions menu checked. It booted, but 10.2 asked for the second disk for some reason, which I inserted. It went through installing stuff and has since been running fine. I have of course backed up my 10.2 system, because it is good as gold given the difficulties of installing from the disk that I have had. This is the best that I can remember anyway (it was awhile ago). Good luck. |

Never having done this, since all my macs are old world, I can't speak from experience; however I see no reason it couldn't be done booting the OSX clone from an OS 9 partition with XPF and doing the necessary install of bootx, etc. Tom_Barret says he's done it! |

I've done something similar. I used CCC to Clone my FW800 Dual PMG4's system to a FW drive. Then I logged in as root and tossed everything I knew my PBG3 Kanga wouldn't need. Then I made an Image with CCC and transfered it wirelessly to the Kanga. I still can't get OS9's Apple Software Restore to not give errors with the CCC image. Gotta be an answer somewhere..... So, I used CCC with the already installed 10.2.8 on the Kanga to restore the image to a SCSI drive. From there I went back to OS9 and used XPF to install the BootX, Extensions, and Startup item to the SCSI system and booted it.... Got the grey Apple, then the slashed circle. Hummmm. I went back to the already installed 10.2.8 and Repaired Permissions on the SCSI drive. It repaired EVERY SINGLE FILE! Took Hours! But, then IT BOOTED! And, it works great! Yes, I had a lot of free time, maybe too much ;-) It would be great if you could get OS9s Apple Software Restore to work with the CCC disk image. My Plan was to make an image small enough to fit on a CD, bundle it with ASR and burn it. If you could do that, you could install X on a 9 only machine without running an installer. But, I had the ASR and Permissions problem and I ran out of free time..... It should be possible. Go for it. |

Try it. I think it will work as long as you have the correct hard disk drivers. |

I'm afraid that won't work, sirs. Remember, the only reason OS X works at all on our unsupported macs is the .kexts and BootX that Ryan uses. Unfortunately, at least the .kexts need recoding and recompiling for Panther before they'll load any 10.3, cloned or otherwise, on our macs. You'll just have to sit tight while Ryan pours over the source code once he has it. Or be like me and use a real G4. :) - Chibi Delennâ„¢ |
