I've been hearing talk of upgrading this forum for a long, long time now, and some of the excuses for putting it off have been to do with preserving the information stored here. Well, I for one would like to see this forum thrown out completely, and have phpBB2 or similar software installed fresh & clean in its place. Now would be a good time to do it. We will soon be turning a corner towards Panther, so it would be nice to also turn over a new leaf here and capture all the new discoveries that will be soon be coming in a flurry. I can't say that I really care for keeping these old entries. Beyond a few weeks they're pretty much lost to us anyway, so what would be the point? The questions get asked and answered over and over again, and there is so much duplication in here that carrying it all forward would only succeed in preserving a huge mess. I used to post here a lot more, and now I rarely even come here. Part of that has to do with my XPF Mac running very smoothly, but I would likely contribute my experience and knowledge if I felt that it wasn't just going into the black hole of this forum. Please, just get it done. |

I do agree though about the email addresses. I don't think we would need everyone's permission. People who payed will continue to have access to the new and improved forum. |

Who cares? Lets support people who want to make there old macs go! OWC just wants to sell hardware. People that are too lazy to search, or just have a really hard question or need to pick our brains, or just want to support XPF can still pay. There is quite a nice bit of brain power here after all. Consider that people pay MICROSOFT for help! |

All current members signed up for a private forum. Changing to public forum would likely require promission of all who have posted! I wouldn't have a problem with this as long as my email isn't listed. If the public can read posts why would anyone want to sign up if there questions are already answered? |

How about putting the older discussions into a publicly readable area where google can search them? As read only that is. Just a thought Marty |

Your wishes shall soon be granted. We will be launching the new forum in very short order, and moving the current forum to "read-only" status. We are still working on moving the old posts to the new forum, and hoping that this will be possible. However, as you say, it is better to just get started then to wait until we've figured that out. |

Obviously the forums in their current incarnation suck ass. But, I would hate to see the discussions going on in these forums thrown away. I recently gained access to the tech support forum just a couple of weeks ago. It was nice to be able to skim back through past discussions to find out what worked and what didn't. I for one don't want to post a question that has already been answered because people are going to get tired of answering. Or, when people do answer they will answer in less detail. I propose moving on to something better, but keep the current forum read-only if it can't be moved over to a new system. My only request for new forum software is that it have some kind of search capability. Google? What the heck... no preview button? *sigh* |
