A friend needs to buy a new USB 2.0 4 -5 port card for OSX that will also work in OS 9.x. USB 1.1 in OS 9.x is ok. Anyone have any luck with these? |

Thanks for the replies. The Firewire/USB combo cards are exactly what I'm not looking for ;-( The Umax machines while great workhorses already have a pci bridge chip which runs the lower 4 PCI slots. This means combo cards (which use a bridge chip for the dual use) need one of the two top PCI slots. Most of us already have a Radeon and ATA card in the top slots ;-) though Acard ata cards unlike Sonnet/Promise/Firmtek cards work in any PCI slot. i've found my card it seems.Just in case anyone else is looking. IOGear GIc251u 5 port (one internal) supports Mac OS 8.6 and higher. OSX needed for USB 2.0. Fully backward compatible with USB 1.1 $18.26 plus $4.99 shipping from www.buy.com who I've never bought from. Ok smart A.. Marty ;-) how's that G900 MHz upgrade doing? What kind of speed are you getting? |

Regarding my earlier post, I need to add that my beige minitower has a revision A ROM, $77D.40F2 revision A. However, the FireWire/USB 2.0 card DOES work (at least on MY system) with Jaguar and with 9.2.2 (USB 1.1 only in Mac OS 9). Hopefully it will work with Panther. It is the USB-only card which the company says will not work pre-G3 machines, but the multifunction (FireWire/USB 2.0) card will work with the older machines. The company's web site, http://www.orangemicro.com has lots of information. |

I have a "Beige G4" upgrade using a Sonnett ZIF 500 MHz. I am using an Orange Micro OrangeLink+ FireWire/USB 2.0 multifunction PCI card. It works fine, including in 9.2.2. At the school I used to work at, we had a G3 "All in One" beige machine with the same card, and it worked, including in Mac OS X Server (v. 10.0). It worked great with a La Cie USB 2.0 CD/RW drive. I understand there are some problems with the Orange USB 2.0 single function card and the beige machines, but not with the FireWire/USB 2.0 multifunction cards. You can read about these products at http://www.orangemicor.com |

Sonnet pissed me off, when at macworld there "macintosh products manager" told me that her kids had PCs at home because macs were too expensive. Yikes! Anyhow, my USB2 card(NEC) which works great in OSX, is a no go entirely in 9. Actually, who cares about OS9? Why do you need this function? Marty |

Sorry, the sonnet card was the only one I know of that claims to work in pre-G3 B&W. Not to say that that IS the only one. Your right about Sonnet it's 50/50, as I got a G3 card from them and it was bad. They sent me another after I payed to ship the old one back and it has always worked 100%. They did upgrade me from 400mzh/512k to 450mhz/1mb with out me asking for it, but they tried the old "I have it in a Mac right now and it works fine." and I gave them the "Well it did not work for me and you will send me a new one." It's all in the tone of the voice. |

I thought of that and then I said no not them guys ;-) Ok, I checked it out they only sell the USB 2.0/firewire combo like a lot of Sonnet stuff it has issues in some older machines. The Umax S900/J700 which a card is needed for is one of them. Yes they list it as compatible. Just ask anyone with a Umax machine that has had issues with the Sonnet G4 700 & 800 upgrades what that means. The tech guys at Sonnet if you get a good one will admite the marking guys at Sonett have control of the company thanks anyway ;-) Please no need to tell me how well your sonnet stuff works. I know it works for some people in some hardware configs. |

Go with Sonnetech.com. The Siig 5 port won't work in 9 (old world) at all. |

I had a very long struggle with that already. As far as I know, there is no support for EHCI mode (USB-2) on OS 9. But the card is supposed to work in OHCI compatibility mode (USB 1.1), which is what you got. |
