Ok guys, I'm having a brain fart. I don't feel like searching through the forums for this. My apologies for rehasing something old. I recently flashed a radeon 7000 for mac. Works great. I have forgotten how to enable quartz extreme on this card. Do I have to use PCI Extreme or is there a command line hack? Does this only work in 10.2 or will it work in 10.1.5 or earlier? Thanks for the help. C |

I don't know one bit about games ;-( but a little about SCSI, and the 33 MHz slots limit I/O to 53MB/sec there - regardless of drives and controllers etc (wish I knew that BEFORE my attempt to get 200MB/sec speeds!) Using a "66 MHz compliant" card like UL3S-66 or 39160 or UL4S in the 66 MHz slot overcomes the PCI-PCI bridge bottleneck and allows you to have more "normal" bus and thruput. Unless ATI is doing something 'wrong' or the card doesn't operate properly in a 66 MHz slot (and they are NOT an industry-standard 66 MHz PCI slot for some reason), I would expect to see better results. With Panther and QE, XBench shows better scores than w/o QE patch. Subjectively it seems fine, and others report no issues wtih DVD playback or artifacts as in the past. You need a Beige or later (Grackle) QE isn't an option on 8xxx era systems. |

I have a Radeon 9100 250/250 (which is basically a 8500 / R200) in my 8600 G3 500 but haven't tried PCI Extreme. My computer is too slow to show any improvements in games except at higher resolutions. I believe the 66 MHz slot in a B&W G3 adds only between 0 and 3 fps compared to the 33MHz slot in the same computer using Quake III. Does anyone have results different than that? Maybe the large textures used by QE benefit more from the 66 MHz slot? |

I've got a Built BY ATI Radeon 7000 32MB PC card flashed in my 8600/G3 450/1MB, overclocked to 225/225. Did not gain 1FPS in Q3, but my Ram is 70ns and no G4 so my CPU/RAM maybe the reason for no gain from 183/183 or the card is a PIG. |

Speaking of the card being weak and slow speeds. You can overclock the radeon 7000 but I haven't attempted it yet. I happily flashed a pc card, been running stable for a few days now (since flashed). I may attempting adding a small fan and overlcocking it soon. If so, I'll post my results here. Thanks for the info peeps. |

Some say that it works even better in 10.3 but they also have B&W and use the 66 MHz slot - that slot avoids the PCI bus bottleneck in these systems, works for 66 MHz SCSI cards, too. I would definitely skip 10.2 and hope more people get onto Panther - but maybe when its up to 10.3.1. I'm going to reenable it on my Yos today, too. |

It can be done from CL but PCI Extreme APP works too. There is only QE in 10.2 and up so no QE in 10.0-10.1.5. |

BTW, I can not understand why bus bandwith is a factor in QE if you can get 35-40 FPS in Q3 1.32 in 10.2.x with all the eye candy on @1024x768. The Radeon 7000 is the factor that makes QE flake out on the PCI bus. The AGP cards that do QE have more render pipe lines ect. than the RV100, and the core and memory clock speeds of the R100 pci are too low 166/166. Others may disagree, but it would be nice if they could offer some facts to backup the "bus bandwith" claims. If only we had a R200 or NV17 or better chip with a 250+ core and memory clock speed we could put this to the test. Bottom line is R100 and RV100 are WEAK cards:-p |

I just used PCI extreme with no probs... then used Quartz check to make sure it was up and running. Only tried it in 10.2, so can't help you on earlier versions... ATI Radeon 7K on PTP w G3 400 |

You could do either. PCI Extreme just rewrites a plist file. the file is buried deep and far into the library, and it is just a matter of opening it in text edit and changing a line from "AGP" to "PCI". Unfortunately I have not done it in a while so I forget exactly where it is, PCI Extreme does the same thing, and it is easier to use. Jim |

It only became a feature in 10.2. PCI extreme is the easiest way, Personally I think it's a waste of time. Marty |
