Beige G4 (PowerLogix) won't install OS X |

I'm attempting to load OS X.1 (from an iMac OS X install disc -- purchased at OWC) onto a new (in a spare bay) Seagate 120GB HD with two partitions (8GB for OS X and remaining 100+ GB running 9.2.2). I've upgrade the beige tower with a PowerLogix G4 500Mhz ZIF. Downloaded Ryans XPostFacto 2.2 and tried to install OSX from the CD -- there is no XBoot on the CD. After starting the install, XpostFacto "grabs" the extensions it needs to create a boot partition, but the screen then stays black after the reboot starts. After several long minutes the Mac boots up on my main drive, a 60 GB Maxtor -- that will be swapped for the Seagate 120 once I have OSX installed. IAny ideas from the tech/user community ... what steps I should try in order to get OSX on this drive? Has anybody had success with installing OSX on a "beige G4 tower"? thanks in advance, for any replies.... damian21 |

Sorry, from your first post it sounds like Open Firmware can not open the Mach_Kernal file from your Slave HD and it "times out" looking for the HD and boots to OS 9. To confirm this you must set the "output" device for Open Firmware in XPF Menu to the video device you have your monitor hooked to. If you see a white screen with black text that says "Can't open............" over and over until it boots to OS 9 then you need to try the 120GB drive as the Master. Trust me I'm right from time to time. |

mjoecups (marty): I am using XPF because according to Ryan a beige G3 with an upgrade card (mine has a PowerLogix G4n ZIF @ 500Mhz) "...there are situations in which it is difficult to install or boot Mac OS X on thses machines (beige G3) , especially if you have a G4 CPU upgrade installed. In those cases, XPostFacto sometimes helps." I might try installing OS X with the original 300Mhz ZIF instead of the G4 ZIF upgrade ... do you think I'd have better luck with this scenario?? =damian21= |

The OSX.1 install CD MUST be bootable in my experience. Every OSX installer I have ever seen was bootable, and I have seen MANY. Also, you shouldn't even need XPF for the beige G3 and 10.1... Good Luck, Marty |

Slave drive is supported on this beige ... the 120GB Seagate is also on ATA 1 -- the 60GB is on ATA 0, and the 60GB does NOT have a bootable OS X installed. I need to install OS X onto the 120GB on the 8GB partition -- then the 60GB can go into an external case as a FW drive. Will the OS X.1 iMac install disc (Not bootable) work with XPostFacto 2.2 to install OS X onto the 8GB partition? Is there a conflict with the PowerLogix G4 ZIF when trying to install OS X.1? ....and will I be able to upgrade to Jaguar (X.2) with upgrade discs? I currently have no bootable OS X CD's -- have iMac OSX.1 'install' disc and have Disc1 & Disc2 of Jaguar upgrade. Do I need to have a bootable OS X CD to install with XPostFacto? |

Some Beige G3's have no support for slave drives. I think you need a Rev C Rom dimm in it for Slave to work right, so check that. |

If you already have a bootable OS X install on the 60G, why not use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone it over to the 120? |
