SCSI burner randomly appears |

The external Yamaha 4416S SCSI burner is randomly recognized by my 8600/200 XLR8 G4 450 (Mac OS X 10.1.5, XPostFacto 2.2, Toast Titanium 5.1.4): I cleanly installed Mac OS 10.1.5 via XPostFacto 2.2 and the CDRW was missing from Toast. I reinstalled BootX and Extensions and the CDRW reappeared. But when I rebooted, the CDRW was missing again until I re-reinstalled BootX and Extensions. ...and after a reboot the CDRW was missing again! I did the next reboot in verbose mode (Command-v) and the CDRW appeared again in Toast. I have a gut feeling that verbose mode is somehow more forgiving when looking for devices. Can this be true? (I didn't test XPostFacto's throttle options (the default 8 was on)). |

You know, that is possible. One of the things about Mac OS X is that it only scans the SCSI bus for devices once, at boot time, so if your device is not responding at that time, it won't be seen. So delaying that part of the startup process might actually help. |

A follow-up to my original post in this thread: After I installed AppleScript Update 1.8.3 (which the FF mpeg X mpg2 encoder needs), the CDRW is now recognized even via non-verbose boot. I think the AppleScript Update makes the 8600 boot slightly slower and maybe there is now more time for the CDRW the be recognized even in non-verbose boot mode? |

I suppose that there might be subtle differences in the timing of the boot process when in verbose mode vs. regular mode. As far as I know, there are no intended side-effects on things like finding devices, but it is possible that there are some unintended effects. One thing about Mac OS X is that it only checks for devices on the SCSI bus once, at startup time. It never looks again. So it is possible that in some cases, the timing is such that the CD-RW is "answering" at the correct moment, but in other cases it is not. |

I've noticed that too. You might try leaving a cd in the drive when you boot your machine. I've usually gotten the machine to recognize the drive this way. |
