Sound Output Problems with XPF 2.2 & 10.2 |

Jack, I'm having similar problems. On my heavily upgraded 7500/PowerLogixG3- 350/464MB using 10.1.5 I was able to listen to iTunes 2.04 fairly well. All my disks are on a Tempo 66 ATA/PCI card and any other disk activity while listening resulted in sound interruptions. These interruptions were much worse with iTunes 3. I was getting sound out of both my internal speaker and my external speakers. Turning on Mute caused my internal to stop but allowed my externals continued to work. The situation is much worse now. While overall, I am VERY pleased with XPF 2.2 and OS 10.2 on this old machine, I have essentially NO sound output! Nothing in iTunes, nothing in QuickTime movies, no system alerts output to either the internal or my external speakers. The ROM chime does sound at startup, so I know that the speakers are all still working! I say "essentially" no output because in iTunes 2.04, I sometimes can get about the first 2 secs of a song when the application is first launched. After that, the sound will continue to "play" meaning the elapsed timer continues to count but I get no sound. Most of the time clicking on a song will bring up the name but it doesn't even play. The elapsed timer never even leaves 0:00. With iTunes 3 I don't even get a few seconds of sound. Just 0:00 on the timer. The app doesn't freeze. I can continue to choose songs, turn on visuals (with no sound!), etc. BTW, same results if I choose the Radio Tuner. This is no longer my primary machine, however, I don't want to go back to OS 9. If only this sound issue could be worked out!! Anybody else having this problem? Neil |

Wish I had an answer, but you know misery loves company. I have tried using iTunes with some songs on an external SCSI with no improvement. I don't have VPC so that is not a related issue for me. This sound output problem is not related to iTunes. I have no sound with QuickTime movies either. I do still hear, "You've Got Mail" so I do know that sound output CAN work on this system. Other than the silence, I am wonderfully pleased with 10.2 on this upgraded 7500/G3-350/Rage video. Any other ideas out there? I'm going to try pushing my OS X startup disk to my external SCSI when I get the opportunity and just see if that changes anything. Thanks! |

I found a fix for the sound problem, at least the VPC sound problem. Turning of the sound in VPC and Soundblaster in the win OS solves the problem. Here is the thread from the Connectix forum. http://www.connectix.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=56;t=000014 |

I just launched Process Viewer to see if the sound drop out problem is caused by an application hogging the CPU. None seemed to be using anything more than normal. It seems like it's some kind of a disk issue. Looking at the posts it looks like it affects both users that have SCSI drives as their boot drive and ATI drives. I can recreate it every time by launching and playing Itunes and launching Virtual PC. It doesn't always require a reboot to get the sound back. If this was an issue on supported Macs I would think it would be all over the boards. |

I just installed Jaguar last night and it is running smooth. My only problem still seems to be with sound output. In fact it seems to have gotten worse with Jaguar. I can launch my music applications (for example real radio) and start hearing music. As soon as I do anything else like putting files in the trash bin or even opening a drive to look at files, the sound stutters and quits completely while the timer keeps going in Real. I stop the music and try to restart it (online radio with a Cable DSL connection) and I get nothing. As I am typing this, I am trying to play a CD in Itunes and can't get it to work even though it recognizes the CD. Does anyone know if the Sonnet ata 66 pci card is possibly the culprit? By the way, my CDRW is a Yamaha 2100 that is also attached to the PCI card along with my primary hard drive. System: PM 8500 with G3/500, 416 Mgs Ram, 1 Sonnet 66 ata pci card with 30 meg Seagate drive as primary and Yamaha 2100 CDRW as seconday. 2 additional SCSI drives attached internally. Thanks. |

I experience the same sound problem with XPF 2.2 and 10.2, but I don't have the ATA card (I do have a MacAlly Firewire Card though). |

I have had problems with the sound dropping out with both ITunes and Realplayer. It seems to happen when I open Virtual PC. I get lots of disk churning and thats when the sound drops out. I have 768 megs of ram but it still seems like some kind of swap disk problem, just like what used to happen with 10.0. For me it only seems to happen when I use VPC. |

This may be the case. I had forgotten to mention that I also have a sonnet tempo 66 ata pci card installed and OS X resides on the first 8 megs of the hard drive attached to this card. My sound problem seems to come and go. This morning, I booted up and was able to run music for about 1 1/2 hours without any problems while working with MS Word. It's kinda hard to pinpoint the problem since I am not a computer guru. Just trying to make the computer last a little longer until I break down and buy a new one. Thanks, Jack |

I wonder whether this is related to the ATA card issue. Sonnet has a Tempo AV Tool that is supposed to help with this kind of thing, but it looks to be Mac OS 9 only at this time, unless I'm missing something. What they say is that it "slows down the data transfer from the ATA card." I suppose that it might be possible to figure out how to do that. |
