Could change of monitor cause kernel panic? |

I've been using OS X with XPostFacto on my 8500 (PowerLogix G3/500) with a Samsung SL955 without any problems for a couple of months. This morning I took it in to work and where I have an Apple 17" multiscan on my desk. Kernel panic at boot up. It's the exact same setup as at home except with the Apple monitor plugged in to the built-in port instead of the Samsung plugged in to a PCI video card. Reinstalling XPostFacto extensions didn't solve the problem. Unfortunately, I can't just plug the Apple monitor into the PCI card as I don't have an adapter with me. I'm surprised that this would cause a problem, but I can't think of anything else which is different except for a few minor things (GeoPort modem in modem port, Apple keyboard instead of a generic one--things one wouldn't expect would cause a problem). I'll get an adapter and try plugging into the PCI card. Hoping it's the port and not the monitor and there isn't room on my desk for the Samsung. |

Well, I plugged the Apple monitor in to the PCI card with an adapter and it booted up just fine, so the problem in gone. I don't know what would happen with my usual (i.e. pre-X) dual monitor setup, but there isn't room on my desk for a second monitor right now anyway. Will post again when the time comes. |

If you write down the text of the kernel panic, I might be able to figure out what general area the problem is in. One thing you might try is deleting the preferences file that deals with things like monitor resolutions and the like. It is located at: /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist |
