Classic won't start in 10.2 |

There are a lot of references scattered through the posts about Classic not loading under 10.2. Has anyone figured out how to fix this yet? I'm running a g4 upgraded 9500 with two separate ultra SCSI drives (25 & 80 GBs) on an Adaptec 2930 card. Both have four partitions (made with Hard Disk Speed Tools). There are no internal drives. OS X & OS 9 are on separate partitions. A new installation of 10.2 on a different partition did not produce a useable Classic environment. |

According to MacIntouch.com, Apple has published an AppleCare Knowledge Base Document on this subject: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106982 I'll have to try the offered solution when I get home. --Dwight |

With regard to USB issues: 1) I have an Orange Micro Firewire/USB card. 2) After restarting, while attempting to install a fresh copy of OS 9.2.X (using OS9Forever) on another partition, I got a message saying that I was missing some USB software & would I like to go online to look for it. (As it turned out I could only install OS 9.2.1.) |

Classic 9.2.2 works for me and I have a USB/FireWire card. But I don't have any devices connected to it. But I have confirmed that FIreWire at least works. |

I haven't had time to investigate this very much, so I'm no further ahead at the moment. One thing I have noticed is that 10.2 is not offering to upgrade my Classic components. I'm assuming that is part of the problem, but I'm not sure how to solve it. In reading the technote for 10.2, I noticed that some changes were made to the way in which Classic handles USB devices. That made me wonder whether the problem might have some correlation with hardware--I have Firewire/USB cards in both machines that I have tried, for instance. |

This afternoon my iBook came home from Tokyo (with a new English Keyboard), so I immediately upgraded it with Jaguar. I noticed that as Classic attempted to load I was asked to upgrade some components. After these were installed Classic worked just fine. I did a search, found all the items that were created or modified on that disk today & copied them all to a folder on my desktop. Then I transferred them to my legacy setup and installed them in my Classic system. No Joy. How's it going Ryan? |

I just upgraded from 10.1.5 last night to 10.2 and tried running it this morning. No luck, however when I went back to my 9.2.2 which was upgraded using the patches from os9forever.com and used xpost to restart to OS X, I checked reinstall boot x and reinstall extensions (which I hadn't on the initial upgrade). The upgrade worked and I am using 10.2 at this moment. I test the classic mode and I got a screen that said classic mode needed to be updated to work. After it did its thing (just a minute or so) classic worked with no problems using Microsoft Outlook to grab my work mail. I am not sure if this helps, but I haven't run into any problems with it yet Jack |

Tried 10.2 with a wiped partition and a clean install. But that was no help in launching Classic. Then tried a clean install of 9.1 (on a fresh separate drive even). Still no luck. Noticed something on "Mac OS Rumors" site however. Mentioned was Mac OS X 6D47 ("a preliminary build of what will shortly be released as the 10.2.1 Update"). The site listed several features of (and adjustments to) 10.2.1, including "improved Classic startup performance". Boy, I sure hope so! |

Well, here's something interesting. My Classic partition was OK, but my 10.2 trial partition was hosed. (I used my 10.1.5 clone partition to try the upgrade.) So, I went ahead & applied the 9.22 olde world patch to the 9.22 upgrade .sim file, upgraded my Classic partition to 9.22 from 9.21, and my 8600 booted fine in Classic 9.22. But, upon booting it asked if I want to initialized my 10.2 trial partition. Aw Nuts! So, I did. Then I rebooted into my good 10.1.5 partition and CCC'd my good partition to my newly initialized trial partition. That completed. I'm going to try to re-updated my 10.1.5 trial partition to 10.2. But, that won't happen until tomorrow night, at the earliest. So, stay tuned for film at 11. --Dwight |

Seems to be related to upgrading from an already "used" classic system... Try installing a 9.1 clean and then launching classic from 10.2 Marty |

Classic works fine for me in 10.2. I did a clean install of Jag and then copied my old Classic System back onto my Jag drive and it works perfectly. Britney |

Seems this problem and its source are proving difficult to solve. There has been no resolution I can locate since Jaguar bowed. Hopefully it will be addressed though, since constantly restarting to use certain programs is beyond a nuisance. Classic runs perfectly on my and my friends supported machines, but on my upgraded G4 9500, Classic quits before it even begins. |

G2, Great to hear! Misery loves company, and, if Ryan is having the same problem, I know we'll get a sol'n here soon. I'm glad to hear your clean install worked. Did you try just reinstalling Classic after an update? I may try that this evening. Stay tuned for film at 11. --Dwight |

thanks for starting this thread. there have been some scattered posts about this issue, and it's fairly well known (among these readers) and Ryan is aware of it (he can't get his Classic to work, either). for me, Classic works in a clean install of both 9 and 10.2, but won't if X has been upgraded to Jag, nor if Jag has been clean installed and 9 hasn't been. |

I have the same problem. Classic just quits before anything starts to load. I don't think it has to do with running on an old world Mac because it works in another install I have. Does anyone know if there is a log that could identify what's going on? |
